@FrankMcCallum pep * his career. Boy said himself £8m deal to sign for Celtic was done in 2017 and pep vetoed it at the last minute he never recovered after that ruptured hamstring that season

Mate who's a Boro fan said his legs were made of glass, when he was with them. Think injury has ruined him.

Just saw he’s at Sunderland. Should absolutely tear up that league if he stays fit. A 35 year old mcgeady stood out like a sore thumb in it.

I always felt he lost that yard he needed when he got injured at us.

I think that’s why we never pursued him after that.

Patrick Roberts says Celtic experience will help him at Sunderland as playmaker discusses Alex Neil conversations and 'amazing' fans
Patrick Roberts says he will embrace the pressures and expectations which come with playing for Sunderland – comparing the experience to his time at Celtic.

Roberts spent two and a half years with the SPL side and played some of his career while on loan from Manchester City.

But despite several loan spells, the 25-year-old has struggled to find a club where he’s played regularly since leaving Celtic in 2018.

He made just two senior appearances for French club Troyes in the first half of this season, before signing for Sunderland in January.

Due to Roberts’ lack of game time, he had to wait a month and a half to make his first Black Cats start, and even played for the under-23 side - at his own request.

Still, Roberts showed what he’s capable of during a man of the match display at Lincoln, where he created several opportunities in the goalless draw.

When I came in first off I kind of knew I hadn’t been playing a lot of football, as much as I was eager to play,” said Roberts after the match.

“It was about building that up and getting to a place where I was physically comfortable.

The manager spoke to me all the time and knew that, and I knew that, so it was just about working hard every day in training and waiting for my chance.

“Credit to the manager, he’s been great since he came in and has been very good tactically, mentally, and he gets you in the right place.

“He didn’t have to say much to me, he just wants me to go out there and do what I do best and that’s all I can try and do to help him and the team as best I can.”

Roberts scored his first goal for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light after coming off the bench during this month’s 2-0 win over Crewe.

Playing in front of big crowds is nothing new for the playmaker, who says he can feed off the support.

“It’s just something you have to get your head around and get used to, it’s not a bad thing,” he added. “You want the fans there and want them on your side.

"My best football came when I was playing in front of 60,000 fans in Scotland. I come here and there are 30,000 at the Stadium of Light and it’s the same kind of feeling, just obviously a different league.

“There is the same motivation, same ambition, same expectation from the whole club down to us players and we want to get the job done.

The support has been amazing and we hope that continues, and we’ll do our best on the pitch as usual.”

When asked how close he is to the level he showed at Celtic, Roberts replied: “I’d say I’m probably even better. Obviously I’m older now, when I was younger I was maybe a bit sharper.

“With the run I’ve had in the team at the moment I’m just getting to my best football and I can only get better.

“Hopefully I’ll have time to show this club and these fans what I can do and help them reach the goal which is obviously promotion.”

Ange Postecoglou reportedly rejected the chance to bring Patrick Roberts back to Celticin the summer.

The 25-year-old was adored by the Parkhead faithful during a two-and-a-half year spell at the Hoops

Roberts first joined in January 2016 on an initial 18-month loan deal from Manchester City.

He contributed to Celtic's unbeaten domestic season under Brendan Rodgers before returning on a year-long loan in the summer of 2017.

But the talented winger could have been back in Glasgow for a third spell during the summer transfer window.

The Athletic has reported that Roberts held talks with Postecoglou over a move.

But the Celtic boss turned down the chance to loan the former England youth international, who is now on the books of Sunderland.

It's understood that Postecoglou felt Roberts lacked the 'single-mindedness' to excel under his stewardship.

At this point, I'm just not going to go against Ange on anything. If Ange thinks he lacks single-mindedness, then Paddy Roberts lacks single-mindedness.

If that's true then I stand by Ange and his decision, look at the players he's signed, levery single one is 100% focused and committed.

Not surprised at all, I absolutely loved Roberts while he was here but the way his career has gone down the pan is pretty telling. He's had some poor luck with injuries and some * moves but when you're as talented as he is, you expect so much more. There's a reason why he is where he is.

I've thought for a few years now and posted in this thread about how his mentality is obviously lacking somewhere. He just isn't up to fulfilling the potential he had when he was a kid. This just proves it.

As much as I loved Patrick Roberts during his time at Celtic I think this was the right decision once again by Ange. Never mind the fact that Roberts has had such bad luck with injuries you just feel that yes he would have struggled with the intensity required to play in Ange's system.
