I don't normally watch F1, I'm also no fan of Hamilton but * me that isn't how a sport should be won and lost surely!?

He has a 12 second lead, has cars in between him and the second place guy.
Some random guy not in the fight crashes so they have to slow the race down, not Hamiltons fault!
So after the better driving and tactics and on their way to the win everything before it doesn't matter anymore.

They then say that second place by 12 seconds doesn't matter anymore, the 4 or 5 cars in between the drivers doesn't matter anymore.
Bring them both together and just ignore that the guy in second place has now the advantage......

    Great sport!

Been controversial decisions all season, some of them favouring Merc and LH and some favouring Red Bull and MV.Don’t see the FIA been biased to any team, more so in gaining viewers and £££’s which it has done even going by this thread.Lewis should’ve given Max place back on first lap as Max was ahead by time Lewis went off the track and they were wrong In letting the lapped cars between the pair of them past in the penultimate lap, swings and roundabouts.
Max had the better season and deserves the championship.

The decision WAS wrong - doesn't matter what Hamilton had on!

Yeah I agree that Max should have gotten his place back on the first lap.

On this one race alone and for the fairest result, given Max didn't get that place back then the 12 seconds he was allowed to catch up after the crash was more than enough to even it out, to actually allow those cars to pass was not only bad sportsmanship it was basically cheating a person out of a title, they would have just as well ended the race after the crash and gave the title to Max!

It does sound harsh, but to be fair, that's the rules and has been the case for years. Happens almost every race (or every other) that a safety car comes out and those same things happen.

The only thing up for discussion for me, and it is harsh, is the decision to let just those cars between 1st and 2nd pass, and not the others behind max. The focus went on to those two drivers over everything else.

The 12seconds etc being reduced is part of the course of a safety car, that happens every race a safety car comes out. So no one really (surely) has a complaint about that part of it.

The 12 seconds he was able to get back after the crash is irrelevant in the discussion about the first lap decision.

Yeah I did say that in my second post, I have seen some races before and I understand that the guys come together when the safety car comes out.
I really can't get my head around allow the cars in between to basically 'get out of the way' though.

I know, it was basically saying that things evened out a bit.

Hey if Max got in front at the first lap then he would maybe not be F1 champion now!

I also don't think the 12 second has anything to do with the fact they allowed cars to pass that were in-between the 2 drivers at the end.

I was just summing up the things that went on during the race as a previous poster said things have maybe even out during the season.

I think the allowing the cars to pass with 1 lap to go was so bad and unsportsmanlike it begs belief, I don't know how any sports fan could disagree with that!

The incident on the first lap was all down to Max barreling into the corner and forcing Lewis off the circuit. Had Lewis made any attempt to make that turn (whilst remaining within track limits) then there would have been a collision (which would have suited Max). That's not how elite level racing is conducted!

There's no argument for Lewis having to give the place up to Max for going off track. The only issue is; did Lewis gain a subsequent advantage when driving off track limits? And the answer is, yes... he gained just under a second! I think most folks are cool with that though as the incident was of Max's doing after all. All that said, Lewis then sprinted off into the distance - it had no bearing on what followed - Lewis was MUCH faster through the race than Max!

Yeah it was a bit of a mental decision. I think they just wanted the race to end as a 'race' and not behind a SC

Yeah they should have let all the lapped cars get through to be honest.
But that would have likely have taken them the whole of the final lap to do so, before max and lewis would have started racing again.

They've done it to give the spectacle of the final lap race, but in doing so they must have known it handed the full advantage to max.

Alternatively, if they allowed the cars to unlap themselves, red bull would have complained about that aspect of it (the decision to let them unlap themselves is not set in stone from what I understand) so they got caught between which route to go down, in turn went half arsed with it to give a final lap race.

Either way, one of them would have bitched and complained.

Personally I'm happy not to see Lewis win it, he's a *.
And I can (biased of course) see the arguments from red bull, mercedes could have theoretically pitted Hamilton during the safety car as well, to get the fresh tyres on as well. But (as they said in the team radio) that would have cost them track position (Hamilton would have started the restart in second place behind max). That in turn would have taken away the lapped car aspect.
Red bull took the risk, as did Mercedes not to (they clearly hoped the race would have finished under safety car) pit. The restart is what it is now.

Don’t really ever watch it. What exactly happened at the end when the safety car came out? Like with the allowing cars to pass or not to pass or something? Were the two of them not 1st and 2nd anyway?

Hamilton was absolutely robbed. Total joke decision from Massi.

It didn't just hand the full advantage - it handed him a certain victory... there was no way Lewis would have been able to defend that last lap against a car with fresh tyres. The FIA / Stewards knew that fine well. It was a complete disgrace of a decision and an embarrassment for F1.

In hindsight the best thing they could have done was end the race behind the SC.

2 appeals turned down would suggest otherwise.

The 2 appeals were not for the same thing.

I agree mostly, but not a certainty. Very very very unlikely he would have defended that at all, it's very harsh.

But again, Hamilton could have pitted during the safety car as well, fresh tyres, but would have been behind max. Then it would be both ok fresh tyres for a lap. With Lewis in the faster car.

That was their risk to take as well, to hope the race finished under safety car

As far as I'm concerned/aware, the only issue here is allowing just the cars between Lewis and max to pass (and not the rest of the lapped cars).
The safety car, the 12 seconds, the pit for fresh tyres etc, is all part of the racing these days and each team took their own risk during it.

Was one of the appeals for the restart and was it turned down?
