Our academy is world class and our current manager does not gives a chance to youngsters that come from it. The simple timeline is something like this:
2014: João Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and others leave Benfica because they do not get first team football;
2015: despite winning several titles and reaching two EL finals, Jorge Jesus does not get a contract renewal because, among other things, he does not give playing time to youngsters from Benfica's academy;
2015-2020: several talented kids get playing time and become top players (Rúben Dias, Renato Sanches, Gonçalo Guedes, João Félix, etc);
2020: Jorge Jesus returns and the door is now shut again.

There are several great talents needing an opportunity in Benfica's first team. Paulo Bernardo is probably the biggest one right now, but for your reference Benfica B (made up of kids) currently leads the Portuguese second division. So, and answering your question, Jota is one among other big talents that Benfica has produced over the years. Some had better luck with timing than others.

With a loan to buy we know the fee is agreed but is there a set wage that's agreed as well?

Hopefully we just have to say right, we're bidding 6.5 and everything else is already taken care of..

I do think he'll sign for us. Ange already highlighted how we'll be an attractive proposition for young player's to come and play for us from overseas and his stock will keep rising in the system we play..

 

That is quite a roll call of talent. Very impressive.

 

Very interesting insight, especially as Jorge Jesus is very well regarded generally. It must be very frustrating as a Benfica fan to know that the young talent is there and not getting the opportunity.

We’ve definitely won a watch with Jota, he’s a class act. I’d love his permanent signature wrapped up as quickly as possible.

RB - João Cancelo (27y, City, played for us between 13-20y and left for €15M)
CB - Rúben Dias (24y, City, played for us between 11-23y and left for €68M)
CB - Danilo Pereira (30y, PSG, played for us between 16-18y and left on a free)
LB - Nuno Tavares (21y, Arsenal, played for us between 15-21y and left for €8M)
CM - André Gomes (28y, Everton, played for us between 17-21y and left for €15M)
CM - Renato Sanches (24y, Lille, played for us between 9-19y and left for €35M)
OM - Bernardo Silva (27y, City, played for us between 9-20y and left for €15M)
RW - Gonçalo Guedes (24y, Valencia, played for us between 9-21y and left for €30M)
LW - Jota (22y, Celtic, played for us between 8-22y)
CF - João Félix (21y, Atlético Madrid, played for us between 15-19y and left for €120M)

All of them are either on their prime or getting there. Insane generation of talent. As you can see they all left around ~20y. Not even one reached 25y in a Benfica shirt.

 

Some player this boy is, at first I thought he looked a bit powder puff, but he adapted quickly to the physical side and seems solid, him and Kyogo are like those deceptively small * that are absolutely rock solid haha

 

Most of those probably worth €50m - €100m now, some over that.

 

Recently worked beside a guy from lisbon, benfica fan too, who had to go home as sadly his father was ill. When we signed jota I asked him about him and he pretty much said exactly the same thing about the youth

 

I think a set fee has already been agreed should we trigger the buy clause

 

He really does just keep getting better and better. Just hope he loves it so much that he wants to make the loan move permanent.

 

You are correct it is a loan but a fee to buy outright has already been agreed. So at this point the only issue given how good he is should be does he want to sign, because from our stand point buying him permanently is an absolute no brainer.

 

Plus we don't know how the contract is written. The clause to buy may come into effect march until April or some daft * in time for the parent club to re-spend the cash before the taxman gets some etc. Hes ours if the player agrees imo. Hopefully he does.

 

its getting to be a family now says Jota, although, as the gaffer indicated, the contract is now in His court.
So, the narrative has changed from sign him asap Dermott, to read as, sign it Jota, its in your manager's hands now.
Question is, is Daizen Maeda ultimately the replacement for Jota for next season or is he just joining the band of brothers?
