How I want the front three, Hopefully anyway! Kyogo nowhere near as good on the left as through the middle, & this lad looks dynamite

    Last Christmas,
    I gave you my scarf,
    But the very next day
    You gave it away

    Hi Celtic fans!

I have watched a majority of Jotas games for a few years due to me randomly stumbling across a Benfica u19 game, here is my report

Watching him for the first time the kid blew my mind. His flair, technique and ball control was already world class, the way he took on defenders using skills I’ve never seen, creating opportunities out of nothing, taking the team’s corner kicks with both his right and left foot. He had it all

But the transition from u19/B-team football to A-team has been difficult for him and it more clearly showed his weaknesses as a footballer.

While other youngsters from the academy like Ruben Dias, João Félix and Nuno Tavares transitioned from boys to men in their 20’s, the physique of wonderkids like Jota and Tiago Dantas didn’t change much. They now faced quick, strong & mature defenders and it showed

Jota lacks pace like many other wingers. He will accelerate quickly only to lose out on top pace. He is also thin and has to dive not to get bullied physically against defenders.

Combine this with a tough period of old Benfica manager Rui Vitória trying to convert him into an AMC, filling the void of João Félix, he seemed out of position, almost desperate to prove his worth and ended up losing confidence. Benfica supporters were hard on him and he even ended up deleting his social media

The positive side of Jota and why I have followed him is because he can be unique. The way he controls the ball, his creativity, his dribbling. I believe his physique will improve with age aswell, he’s now 22. A Jota with confidence in that left winger position has the potential to be a star. If Celtic can make him feel important and allow him to put on a show he will perform.

Story checks out. I was thin as a broomstick until 22 when the beer and pizza diet finally started to have an effect.

C'mon Ange! Dominos and a six pack of Super Lager every night for this kid!

Come on. You can't pretend physicality is not part of sport, especially a contact team sport.

Not just one-on-one match-ups either. Over the course of a season the less robust you are physically, the greater the chance of you picking up knocks and other injuries.

I'll wait till I see him play before gauging if I think he's too lightweight etc though Tidosbror's comments seem pretty bipartisan.

I’ve never read so much * in all my life. In some cases it helps of course. But not a LW who’s fast and tricky.

There’s hundreds of examples of players who are built small and have thrived. It’s all about play style and other attributes they’ll have.

No point just being a big bruiser. Gets you nowhere. There’s also no correlation between being built and being injured less. Mental.

Eh, the greatest football team of all time were made up of lightweight footballers.

Alba, Dani Alves, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Villa, Pedro... * even Busquets is a big fairy. Nothing to do with your build. As long as you can play football, you can win games.

Think he’s been exactly what we thought that half. Box of tricks, direct and offensive but lacks end product and physicality.

    Hopefully develops nicely here.
