Fannying about? It was two straight out errors, nothing to do with passing the ball out the back. Boot it down field and opposition has more possession and applies more pressure. This isn’t new what he’s doing. Ffs they just got through a team that finished third last in Dutch just a point behind PSV! With that defence after just 10 weeks in charge. He made the changes anyway

Where we are now baring that Hearts result in the league is probably as good as we could have optimistically expected.

When you look at the way it panned out from the boards perspective we should have beat Midjtylland but if we had PSV would have smashed us. Although the outcome would have been the same (Europa League Groups), we would have had one less full house so any money lost in prize money for beating the Danes will have been more than made up by having two sell outs at home to Jablonec and AZ. They have also got a near sell out vs Hearts in the cup.

On top of that there is a feel good factor around the Manager and Team again from the league games.

Despite carrying deadwood our wage bill will still be down with all the high earning loan players away from last year plus The volume of players who have left and been replaced by youth players like Shaw, Urhoghide, Lawal and Scales. A few signings from lower paying leagues like Juranovic and Abada. We have added a few who will be on decent money but overall I would think it would still be down.

Anyway my main point is the board have to really do their bit support Ange whose done more than his bit by getting him a few more in and those that aren’t in his plans out.

Aye, fanning about. Maybe not for the two goals against AZ but it made for uncomfortable viewing thereafter. We invite pressure on our own doorstep needlessly.

If you've read my other posts, I said there was a time and a place for playing it out the back. People need to know when there isn't a pass on and we're going to concede possession, go long. We're not at a stage where we can constantly play our way out of trouble in Europe.

Where did I say it wasn't a great achievement to beat AZ?

    Calm your *.

This exactly. The idea that we should always do one or the other is ridiculous.

no way will he stop playing out from the back against the tougher teams. Those are the times you learn what it takes to go to another level and are crucial for him implementing his long term strategy

I'm almost glad there was a rocky moment, felt unfair that the rest of us who watch ange change a way a club plays had to put up with 6 months of gifting goals to the opposition as defenders with 2 left feet tried to learn how to pass through the lines

Ok. Could not find the correct thread. I am new at this. No damage done I would think.

Post match reflection on the AZ game in Holland.

I read or heard in an interview some time back Johann Cryuff saying that a game is determined by the mistakes made in a match and not necessarily which team is better. You may have two very strong teams playing. Thus it is a question of making less mistakes than your opposition and taking advantage of the mistakes that they make.

We actually won that AZ game 1-0 in open play. AZ did not technically score 2 goals from a build up in play or a direct shot at goal.

We had the own goal by Starfelt with the miss - kick.
The other goal, on watching the moment again, has more to it than I first saw. Initially I thought that Welsh had taken his eye off the flight of the ball at the last moment when he was ready to head it away, and it had fallen on his shoulder and it had then run on to Hart who did not get to it in time.
On second and third viewing, it seems Welsh was distracted at the last moment and changed his mind in what he was going to do. Given where Hart was at that time, he may have called for the ball to be his. Communicating and positioning is critical. This would not be the first time such a situation has happened in a game of football dealing with a long high ball down the middle.

I noted how the Az players operated also. How they have obviously been trained to physically use their body to annoy, bump, nudge, block, obstruct the opposition without having the ball as their primary source of concern. So over the 90 mins. they continually are wearing down the other team rather than simply playing football. If the referee allows this from the start then it will continue. They obviously select physically big and strong players to do this. It was clearly obvious when you compared them with most of our lighter and nippier players.

Just watched the Ange presser referring to the Ibrox game. Love to hear him talk - precise, intelligent, calm , good use of language. Have not really heard him talk like this to the press previous to coming to Celtic. He always seemed guarded talking to the Australian Press as national coach because they were always throwing doubts on what he was doing so he did not give them too much. In doing so he also did not give opposition coaches any idea of what his tactics in WC qualifiers would be.

Very pleased to have more depth in the squad with Juranovic. Scales and Giakoumakis on board and possibly 2 more prior to the Tuesday deadline. Looking forward to watching the Rangers match and the lads having a rest till the following game next week. Am loving being on board !

    Love that.

It’s mad how they say they’ve barely trained recently but Ange still has them well drilled.

Aye. Much more to come from Ange and Celtic. Just needs a little bit of time, the transfer window to close and have a settled squad. A couple of his own coaches would go a long way too.
