You can just say Ireland it encompasses the two

I would think New York, Chicago, London and Boston woulf definetly have big numbers

I wouldn't think so. Glasgow isn't all that big and it just seems so. The Irish and the Scots are traditionally nomadic people who have put down roots all over the world. A lot of Irish definitely ended up in the US, Canada, Australia and NZ from what I can gather.

To the tune of when the saints go marching in:

Ange has got a magic jumper
Oh Ange has got a magic jumper
Cast ye spell ye woollen wonder
Oh Ange has got a magic jumper!

    Rinse and repeat.

Percentage of the population wise in the UK it would probably be between us and Liverpool you’d think.

yep. The migration started well before the famine though as I have family tree stuff that proves it. People followed the work or the hope of better lives.

Ok, From a migratory point of view, which city would you think, in the world, would have the most people of Irish ancestry in it ? There is a reason for asking this which I will get to, once I hopefully have some more responses to the question.
Yes it is relevent to this Ange thread by the way.

I also know that Irish immigrants were not treated well in New York or in Sydney and Melbourne by the local predominantly Anglo-Saxon Australian authorities and community in the 1800s and were only given menial jobs and there was also a social bias against them for being Catholics. It was probably even more so during the migration due to the Famine.

If by ‘most’ you mean highest percentage of population, that’s a v close call, and is impossible for anyone on here (without at least going on an extremely thorough Wikipedia spree) to tell you. Decent guesses would be Boston, Glasgow, Liverpool, etc.

However, if you’re talking about simply the highest total number of Irish-descended people, to me it’s going to be either Boston or New York.

You initially asked about Scots as well, imo that then gives New York the edge.

Thanks for that. I do not wish a detailed response but more so a general acceptance of what most people would believe. I do not have a proper idea of how big Glasgow is but I have always believed that Boston and New York had a strong Irish community.

I suppose so but the last figure I recall for the City of Glasgow is around 610,000.

That's probably true and if I'm honest I would've been one but good management is about being pro-active and making unpopular decisions from time-to-time.

Sitting on their hands from October onwards while we watched our season go up in flames then compounding that by being happy to wait 3 months just for a decision from Howe was atrocious management, whatever way you cut it.

Ange would've won round the doubters in the end, irrespective of when we brought him in.

I’m not sure because it would have been last February and games come quick and fast in that situation. It’d either be that or we’d quickly get behind him.

The reason I asked the question re Irish migration was because the Greeks were also a migratory people due to seeking work or avoiding social unrest or because of the aftermaths of the catastrophe of the Asia Minor war in 1921 and WW1 and WW2.

Many may not know this outside of Australia, but Melbourne is the third largest city in the world of Greek speaking people of Greek ethnicity outside of Athens and Thessaloniki. Melbourne also is the city with the most Jewish holocaust survivors from WW2 and their descendants.

So Greeks are very united in Melbourne, very family oriented, close to their Christian faith and cultural traditions and love their sport, especially Association football. The first who came here had virtually no English and had to take any work they could to make a living. They were very aware that they wanted a better life for their children and most worked to that end.
Ange is a product of that migration and so am I and many others as well.

So when we meet people that we do not even know that are Greek/Australian there is an immediate bond and relaxation because we have a common history in Australia- its like we are meeting a distant second cousin for the first time. If in conversation we discover that our families originated from the same part of Greece then that makes the conversation even warmer.

I would think that would be true of Scots/Irish people also.

Ange is important to us here that follow football, especially in Melbourne. Many of us have been following his progress since his early playing days for South Melbourne Hellas. He keeps on saying that his father was his main influence in football because of the connection it created with his dad.

Ange is an intelligent man and he understand the passion of the Celtic fans and the roots it has come from because he is aware of the people and how important football has been in their life.

Forgive me for writing so much but I had a need to share this with you.

The lunatic fringe maybe would've over-reacted.

Most sensible supporters would have realised the car crash he was walking into and would have put any poor performances and/or results in context of not being able to bring in his own players.

He'd have been able to have a good look at the squad and we'd have been much better prepared for this summer.

Biggest thing on people's minds I'd say was not having a manager and the time and opportunity wasted by taking so long. I wasn't too bothered about Howe just happy it looked like a progressive appointment.

Having said that not sure whether we'd have actually gone for or got Ange if it had been any earlier as no idea how long he was on Celtic's radar.
