Same, fart in the workplace and everyone will say BB. Strange that people haven’t heard it and live in the west coast. I’ve even heard “blacko” being used in similar situations

Its not what you say, its how you say it. It can be a warm greeting or down-right nasty.

Yeah I’m genuinely surprised that people around my age know it as a non-racist term but probably as equally surprised as you are that I know it as an exclusively racist term.

That’s what I mean, I’ve never ever heard it in that context to the point it would be jarring. I’ve heard it loads growing up but it was always referring to a black person, and not even in the context they were doing something like farting or spitting.

Every day is a school day I suppose.

Never heard it growing up in the Highlands.

Lived in Glasgow for 8 years and served my time in the shipyard and never heard it. Or maybe I just never batted an eyelid and I’ve become a soft *.

Definitely doesn’t offend me it was just doubting the story.

If I remember correctly, black was replaced with "darkie" if being racist, but to be honest there was hardly any blacks where I grew up I don't ever remember one. It was mostly asians that got the racist remarks.

He is a likeable big * straight to the point as well although I hate we keep using covid as an excuse for almost everything as if it is exclusive to ourselves

Not with the * part on the end, but black in general for dirty, got it all the time from my mum/gran when I was young, like you'd be out playing all day and come in for your dinner manky, "go wash your hands/face, you're black" but it is a very old expression, I'm in my mid 30s and not really heard it much since I was a kid. Nothing to do with race though, I'm sure it has it's roots in glasgow being a heavy industrial city way back, factory workers, miners that sort of thing, getting black with dirt/soot.

You'd have a hard time saying it today and not getting funny looks though, I agree, especially since demographics have shifted and there are a decent amount of non-white people in and around the glasgow area, think most would assume there was some racist slant to it if they'd never heard it before.

The only other context, outside race, where I've heard black used as an insult is towards the cops.

Heard northerners call the RUC "black *" on a few occasions.

Yeah that was roughly my experience with regard to the word black. I’m about the same age as you.

I asked a couple of aunties and uncles there from Maryhill and Govan and the always knew BB as exclusively racist. I think it could’ve been more of an East End term then?

Not saying anyone’s wrong just interesting.

    Anyway, back to Angeball

Grew up in Rutherglen for most my days and it's the most common thing you would say when someone done something clatty.
Grogged, scratched and sniffed their *, picked up food they dropped on the floor, was just the phrase you would say.

    Similar age as well.

Defo hear it less these days (although I have moved away), but generally accepted thing to say.

I'm sure Ange will have grown up with a whole load of sayings that some folk will find strange (keeping on topic....)

Tbf, Dev, I hadn’t ever in my puff until I met my now wife about 4 year ago. Her folk are all from North Ayrshire, and they seem to use ‘black’ in the sense of ‘dirty’ all the time there. I grew up in Kirkintilloch, so it’s hardly like there’s a class difference; just geography, I think.

Was used all the time when I was in Glasgow, I’m 39. Also it had nothing to do with race.

It was more to do with if you where boggin or been out playing football with your pals in a muddy grass field etc.

Again I was also fae the East End.

But on a side note! Mon the Ange

Transfers are still moving far too slowly. Whatever happens next week we have more European ties coming up and the league starting soon. Something needs to move fast.

He’s a proper manager. No throwing anyone under the bus or snaking players to the media.

I thought the interview he gave to Sky sports was excellent, spoke very well, up front and honest about the current situation.
