Eddie Howe remains firmly on course to be named Celtic manager and contractual reasons are behind the delay.

Howe is one of the favourites to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace but Record Sport understands he’s not interested in a switch to south London.

Celtic must wait until Howe’s former club Bournemouth’s season is over to name him as boss due to financial obligations.

The Cherries are 1-0 up against Brentford after the first-leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on Monday night.

Howe will land a huge pay-off bonus from Bournemouth if they are promoted while he remains on gardening leave.

Celtic hope to appoint Howe within the next fortnight and the 43-year-old is still committed to taking over from Neil Lennon.

The Eagles had previously expressed an interest in Howe and yesterday they confirmed Hodgson would be stepping down at the end of the season.

But sources close to Crystal Palace believe Howe is Celtic-bound and the Premier League side are now looking towards the likes of Frank Lampard, Sean Dyche and Rafa Benitez.

Howe will raid his old club for backroom staff and is set to bring in chief scout Richard Hughes along with coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone.

Former Celtic hero Peter Grant is also in the frame for a role after leaving his post as Alloa boss last month.

The club are aware they need to start putting plans in place to sell season tickets for next season.

It is almost three months since Lennon departed and since then John Kennedy has been left in temporary charge.

The winds of change have already started with chief executive Dominic McKay coming to take over from the outgoing Peter Lawwell.

I'm confused about all this.

Howe left BFC in August, by mutual consent. Now the rags are saying he's due a bonus if they make it back to the EPL? That he's effectively on gardening leave?

So the hold up is his * bonus?

1. How much is the * bonus? Because if it's anything over Milli then we know exactly why our * penny pinching board are delaying this?

2. How the * do you get a bonus from an employer almost a year after leaving the post? Surely no employer would draft a contract that * dumb?

3. A years "gardening leave"???

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s due a bonus tbh mate. There’s all sorts going on in these contracts.

Personally I don’t mind if he’s getting a bit of money to wait until the season is over. My only issue is the board should be clearer with the support.

They could be bringing in a DOF and they could’ve said they won’t hire anyone until the summer. It wouldn’t have been popular but it would’ve been the truth.

They have such a lack of respect for us it’s unreal. I hate how everyone will just forget about it in a few weeks when Howe is here.

 

Possible scenario could be.....they wanted to part ways with him, he wanted to go as well just as long as his contract was paid up.

They were tight for cash after spending a * load the previous season on players (including maybe his own salary being sky high) and they struck a deal with him that he would get paid up in full plus a sizeable bonus for his 'patience' if they won promotion and accessed those prem league funds again. If not he would get a reduced percentage of the full amount and paid up asap.

This being based on him not taking up employment with another club during that period, i.e mainly to prevent him going to a team in direct competition with them but contract covered all teams.

Howe wanting some time out the game anyway and on the look out for 'the right project' as we've heard so many times was happy to agree in the hope he would get the full pay off and bonus.

Celtic approach him, he fancies it, he 'signs' behind closed doors but it can't be announced. Speculation grows and his agent puts out the 'nothing happening until the summer' line as the Bournemouth chairman and their lawyers start asking questions. Now we are all just twiddling our thumbs until Bournemouth play out the season.

 

my understanding is the bonuses for getting promotion are usually substantial, bournmouth kinda had to cut back a little so probably didnt want to pay all at once and i believe if you are paid off then any bonus that are achievable have to be paid out also so could be worth 5 million + (wage and bonuses that is )

the record have went too much into detail with this story for it not to be leaked from somewhere within the club ! Also mentioning hughes again which we all thought was a no go so this for me is true and has been fed to press

 

I knew the wait was about a bonus due if they make promotion. Those things are more than we buy players for. Itll probably be worth 3 seasons wages that we pay. Its all sorted anyway imo so just need to wait. Fine with me the lazy * players will be off on holiday again anyway.

 

Even if he is due a bonus what’s actually stopping us from announcing he’ll take charge from 1 June or 1 July?

Surely if his contract with Bournemouth ends say 31 May and we announce his contract with us starts on 1 June it would have zero impact on his Bournemouth contract

 

When you talking £5-10m I wouldnt risk it personally. Footballs a public game, announcements can mess with old staffs heads etc. Can easily put in no public announcements aswel to protect the team

 

Wasnt one of the reason Lennon was still in charge was rumour of a bonus or something? If he left and a new manager came in, if miraculously we did the 10, he wouldnt get his bonus? So logic says, maybe the same with Howe at Bournemouth.

 

Nothing, and why it probably isn't true and just the latest in a series of speculations. A contract might stipulate that you cant take up employment within a certain time but surely can't prevent you from planning future employment. I'm no expert but that sounds like an infringement of some sort of rights.

There are those that are going along with this theory and then also believe that he is working away in the background. "Working", which would surely be an actual breach of any such contract.
