Am sure there are plans afoot to produce a banner or two giving Brown the praise he deserves, with an added message to the board that this capitulation will not stand. I'd put money on it.

10am-4pm Sat, Sun and Monday for those wanting to go to the drop off thing for Brown!

Just me, or is this all seeming a tad weird?

He's no * died, yet folk are dropping off shirts in honour etc - seems odd to me. Like they are just gonna get chucked in the bin come Thursday morning. If someone has passed, I can get the tribute, but seems odd this level.

Maybe I just don't get that sentimental though.

Stephen McManus took on the Celtic captaincy from Neil Lennon in 2007, the Irishman having taken on skipper’s duties from Jackie McNamara before him – who had assumed the leadership from one-time UEFA Champions League winner Paul Lambert before him again.

When Scott Brown was passed the torch by McManus in 2010, the combative midfielder, then only 25-years-old, harnessed a huge responsibility against a lineage of club greats. The likes of Boyd, McStay, Aitken and McGrain had blazed a trail on the pitch before him, with Dalglish, Stein, Fallon and, of course, McNeill among the legends who’d worn the armband with pride and whose names were written into Celtic folklore.

Fast forward a decade and the current captain had clinched an incredible 22 trophies – including four consecutive domestic trebles.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Stephen McManus said: “Scott is going to leave a massive, massive void.

“It’s not just about what Scott brings to the football pitch, I think that’s clear for everyone to see – anyone who’s educated in the game, whether that’s fans of Celtic or other teams – you know what he brings on the pitch.

‘Scott will be sadly missed. I was here at Celtic when Henrik left – the club will move on, there’s absolutely no doubt about that, but Scott is going to leave behind such a big hole in the process.’

“But there’s just so much more to him than what he does on the pitch. It’s his personality, the way he conducts himself on the training ground, in the building, what people think of him, he’s as inspirational a figure as I’ve ever come across in football. So many people look up to him.

“He’s never changed in his personality, he’s got a hunger and a drive in everything he does. Whether he goes into coaching, whether he goes into management when the time finally comes, he’ll be successful because of those traits and his ambition. That said, he’s still got a lot of football left to go, in my opinion, and I think he’s still got another couple of seasons left in him at this level.

With this in mind, McManus said it will be strange to see Scott Brown going up against Celtic after so many successful years, but admitted this is sometimes the nature of football.

Having donned the skipper’s armband at Celtic himself, McManus also knows the pressure tied to the role, which begs the question: just how hard is it to captain a club as big in stature as the Hoops?

“First and foremost being given the captaincy at Celtic is a huge honour, as opposed to it being something which is difficult,” McManus added. “It’s not something every player gets to do and it’s all about how you react to that honour.

“The most important thing was that Scott didn’t change, and I think that’s crucial to the person who’s bestowed with that honour – you need to stay true to yourself. Scott’s always done that. He’s matured, he’s relished the responsibility of it and, again, that just shows his professionalism."

McManus added: “He’s also very protective of his team-mates, he’s a very loyal captain, that’s something which probably goes a little unnoticed, everything he does is for the benefit of the team.

“Even when Scott first came to the club as a young player, when he first signed, it was always about the team it was never about him. He’s always maintained that and that’s partly why he’s been so successful here.”

Do they have to write "Captain. Leader. Legend" in every post about him? Our social media team need sacking, cringe merchants.

Very cringe and as per usual, never reading the room at all.

Guy is a legend and our captain for sure, but the mood this season, surely they see the annoyance if they say he is a leader - leader of what right now?

What's this story I'm seeing running around twitter with Brown supposedly complaining about something said?

Behind Scott Brown, James Forrest is the longest serving Celt in the current squad of players.

At 29, the winger has shared the pitch with our outgoing skipper for club and country, in the Scottish league, domestic tournaments, and all over Europe, and the pair are the only two Hoops stars to have featured in every one of our record-equalling nine-in-a-row between 2012 and 2020 – a triumph first clinched by Billy McNeill, Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox in 1974.

On May 1, 2010, when Forrest replaced fellow Academy graduate Aiden McGeady to make his senior level debut against Motherwell at Paradise, Scott Brown was already Celtic captain – having assumed leadership from Stephen McManus at the beginning of the 2009/10 campaign.

Minutes after entering the field of play, Forrest scored the Hoops’ third of the afternoon and Brown was among the first to huddle round the 18-year-old midfielder in celebration. Neil Lennon’s men won 4-0 that day – the captain would assist Robbie Keane shortly after Forrest’s fine strike – and Brown and Forrest have since shared many, many successes in the intervening years.

Speaking in praise of his long-standing captain, colleague and friend, Forrest said: “Broony all the best for the future, my man.

“I just wanted to say, it’s been a pleasure training with you, playing with you and working with you over the years. You’ve done so much, you’ve helped me so much, you’ve taken me under your wing during so many successful years.

“It’s been a great time to look back on and I wish you all the best in your new role up in Aberdeen. Take it easy!"

One of the most iconic images of Scott Brown and Callum McGregor came from Hampden Park on December 20, 2020 when the club’s captain and deputy held the Scottish Cup aloft – each grasping an arm of the country’s oldest trophy above their head.

Winning a domestic competition in any circumstance is a huge achievement, but this triumph marked the fourth successive year Celtic left National Stadium with their name etched into the silverware.

The win – on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw following extra-time – capped off their historic and unprecedented Quadruple Treble, during which time both McGregor and Brown were pivotal players in one of the club’s most successful periods.

Having made his senior level debut in 2014 under Ronny Deila, McGregor grew as a player under his captain Brown, often playing in front of the combative midfielder and alongside him.

In recent years, whenever Brown has been rested or has been out through injury, McGregor has donned the captain’s armband – something he himself admits wouldn’t be possible had he not learned from the very best.

“Broony, just a quick message to say a big thanks for everything you’ve done at the club,” said McGregor. “You’ve been an unbelievable player, an unbelievable captain and unbelievable guy.

“To have had such an amazing career at this club takes real responsibility, real quality, real class, and that’s everything that you possess.

“So, just a big thank you from everyone at the club and from myself. You’ve been unbelievable.”

We can get at least a goalie and a left back from those four.

Always loved him as he always gave his all. He was over used in the last season or two and not given the opportunity to re-charge his batteries which resulted in him struggling at times. He will be sorely missed , especially when we see him bossing other teams for the sheep.
