I can completely understand why you'd question his ability to take on a job of this magnitude. Clearly he's never managed a club anything like the scale of Celtic.

But honestly, his achievements with Sheffield united are utterly remarkable, as they were with Northampton. He didn't get us promoted to the Premier league by throwing a few quid at it, he took us from league one to the Premier league on an absolute shoe string. Our championship promotion side cost a grand total of about £7 million quid, £4m of which was on John Egan. We had the 19th biggest wage budget, it was about 1/5 of Villas and finished second. He then took most of that same squad to 9th in the Prem. Admittedly the wheels have fallen off since, but the guy has done really well everywhere he's been.
Is he ready for a club or that scale and Europe? Who knows, that's a valid concern. But don't cheapen his achievements. Seriously take a swift look at twitter or S24SU and see the reaction of every Sheffield united fan.

ROY KEANE wants to become Celtic manager and make a sensational box-office return to Scottish football.

SunSport can reveal the legendary Manchester United and Republic of Ireland idol would consider an offer to replace Neil Lennon.

Keane, 49, ended his playing career with a six-month stint at Parkhead.

He hasn’t managed for ten years after ill-fated two-year spells at Sunderland and Ipswich, but is desperate for another shot and the Hoops interests him.

Keane spoke to Celts about becoming their boss before they appointed Ronny Deila back in 2014.

However, those talks collapsed, with the volatile Irishman unimpressed with how the negotiations with chief executive Peter Lawwell developed.

But Keane still feels a strong allegiance to the club and major shareholder Dermot Desmond could see him as the big-name appointment to take on Rangers after Steven Gerrard’s side crushed the Hoops’ ten in a row hopes.

Keane would relish the opportunity to take on Gerrard and reignite the playing rivalry he had with the Liverpool icon.

Celts are weighing up their options as they look to revamp their behind-the-scenes structure at the club, as well as name a new boss.

Dominic McKay is due to take over from exiting Lawwell in June.

And the club are also on the lookout for a new director of football to oversee the entire football department, along with a new chief scout.

However, it is possible they would want their next boss to work with John Kennedy and the current backroom staff.

But that could suit Keane, who does not have his own team in place.

The financial terms likely to be on offer would not be a stumbling block, with wealthy Keane just eager to get back into management.

He also has a major ally in former Hoops boss Martin O’Neill, who has the ear of some of the Parkhead hierarchy.

Keane was O’Neill’s assistant with Ireland and Nottingham Forest.

Despite a mixed managerial record, his judgement and personality would be a major plus for Celtic after a horror campaign in the league.

Eddie Howe, Davie Moyes and Steve Clarke are other names still in the frame for the job.

Gerrard is just as volatile and has made the same mistakes as Lennon he lost that dressing room season before Beale seems to be the one that tuned it around

Fair play, and no disrespect at all to your fans and the club. Good to always see fans come across on other boards and give good insight.

I am still not at all sold on him or see what he has done that could really relate to Celtic and the challenges we will have.

We need a manager experienced in modern footballing structures, being able to develop talent and nurture it properly. We need someone capable of going in to European games and performing well, while fighting strong on the domestic front as well.
9th place in your first season with Wilder is most certainly an achievement, but the fall since seems to worry me more.

For us, at Celtic, we play a dangerous game. If Wilder was to get another EPL job and do reasonably well, win a cup or go to a European spot in the EPL, he would end up being out of our league.
But the flip side, we are not in a position at present to take the risk on him not being more like a Tony Mowbray.

PS. please excuse the tone/language when some of us say "* off Wilder" and the likes, never meant personally or too harshly. Just more a blunt nature in how some of us come across.

I don't want Wilder, but he would be ahead of a fair few of the names being thrown about in my opinion. People saying is that how far we have fallen? We appointed a guy who had been sacked by Bolton and left by mutual consent or he was getting sacked by Hibs as well. He would be an upgrade compared to when we appointed Lennon, but it would be very underwhelming if we do go for Wilder.

Roy Keane will not be the Celtic manger next season. No chance. Absolutely nil.

Keane managing us absolutely terrifies me, it would fully assure us into the banter years.

I'd rather not go Wilder either, albeit I don't think he's a bad manager, just not the best timing for him with us in turmoil and his own club getting relegated.

We should be going all out for Howe, and if we don't get him i'd go for Maresca with Tognazzi as DOF.

DD has a hard on for Irish managers, for as long as he is the final decision maker, Keane can't be ruled out.

I agree it would be another dinosaur appointment though, just like Lennon, Keane only thinks words of motivation are enough to win games consistently, not today it's not though.

Roy Keane is very entertaining as a pundit, says it how it is doesn't hold back, old school tact, controversial, always seemed annoyed about something. I think in the last ten years society has got so PC, everyone's standing on egg shells around each other as not to offend. Footballers, they love an arm around the shoulder at all times. Some of them probably even shave their legs! Keane strikes me as the kind of man that would through a boot at someone's napper when its going * up... preferably Shane Duffy. I don't think he would last long if given the job. And he shouldn't be given it for that reason, his coaching style would be toxic. It would be even worse if he was to keep the backroom staff.

I think Celtic could take 2 very different directions here. Jobs for boys or someone out with the Celtic minded bubble. Lenny failed therefore its obvious. I think its we should try, something different. The Italians, Tognozzi and Maresca, or someone from Serie A, the Italian Job!
