A midfielder should never score then, even a holding one? By your logic then a defender should never be in the opp box let alone score a goal. Ramos - 100 goals for Real, 23 for Spain. As you say, '* class'....

When Lennon played with us, he was in the team to break up play, screen the defence and give it to more creative players. He did that brilliantly. Had it not been for Lennon, Brown wouldn't have been half the player he turned out. When he was here first time round, there was a massive change in Brown's game, and also a massive improvement. Lennon gets the credit for that in my opinion.

Crazy thing to say. Football isn't black and white like that.

Every position on the pitch is more important and difficult to play in certain teams than in others. Being a full back in a Tony Pulis side is infinitely easier to play than being one in a Guardiola side where you're expected to play like an auxiliary centre mid, for example.

No-one is saying it's a bad thing for any player to score but it's obviously not the primary measure of how good a DM is.

Their role is to protect the CBs, recycle possession, move the ball on quickly to more forward thinking players.

Makelele is an example given above of arguably the finest in the role with 5 career goals.

Kante is a current example, a key player in 2 separate EPL winning teams. A mainstay in Leicester's title win he scored a single League goal in 2015/16....does that mean he was a poor player? Of course not, he was voted the Players PoTY that season.

Dunno how you’ve come to that decision about defenders from my logic. Defenders score more than defensive mids because they are taller, in the box for set pieces and Ramos takes pens. Defensive mids don’t go in the box for set pieces, unless they are tall and good in the air. Something Makelele and Lennon weren’t.

Goals don’t make a holding midfielder good or bad.

Was Makelele a bad player because he didn’t score goals?

Good players - beat players and score goals.

Bad players - don’t beat players and don’t score goals.

How can you argue with that logic?

Brown, being a defensive midfield player is neither tall or good in the air, but was in the box the other night and scored cracking headed goal!!!!

    Its not btw.

It’s one of my favourite positions because they are great to watch. The grafter in the team. There’s only a handful of players that are even that good at it.

But he was in the box for a set piece, and often is. You said defensive midfielders don't go into the box unless tall and good with the head Brown is neither but he will look for the second ball and scraps...or on occasion a decent header

Debate on Lennons ability is irrelevant these days. He has sold us down the river this season and his arrogance of not to step down along with the boards reluctance to act and replace him now is going to cost us next season as well. The longer he is here the harder it will be to get a team ready for qualifiers especially with the Euros on. There is now a fear factor that Lennon could actually be here for next season, if it happens it could take us years to recover.

Because we don’t need Brown sitting back for a set piece when your defenders are in the box because he’s too slow.

These things aren’t hard to work out case by case. IN GENERAL defensive mids like Lennon and Makelele won’t be in the box for set pieces.
