CELTIC Football Club today thanked Craig Gordon for his contribution to the club over the past six years and offered him sincere best wishes for the future.

Craig joined Celtic back in July 2014, and was Ronny Deila’s first signing for the club. His competitive debut came on August 13, in a league match away to St Johnstone, where he kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win for the Hoops, and he has gone on to make a total of 242 appearances.

He has won six league titles, five League Cups and three Scottish Cups with Celtic, and was an integral part of the club’s success, including winning the last 11 domestic trophies up for grabs.

Among his many achievements at Celtic, Craig was part of the incredible Invincible Treble in the 2016/17 season, and the picture of him sinking to his knees in celebration after Tom Rogic scored the injury-time winner at Hampden in the Scottish Cup final is one of the most iconic images of that historic success.

The club have subsequently followed that up with further trebles in 2017/18 and 2018/19, while they won the League Cup this season along with a ninth consecutive league title.

He also helped the Hoops reach the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in 2017 and 2018, with his superb performance against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the 2017 play-off, saving a penalty in the play-off second leg in Israel, absolutely crucial in the team’s European progress.

Craig was always a wonderful ambassador for Celtic and, away from the game, he was a massive supporter of Celtic FC Foundation, regularly offering his support and backing for a whole variety of projects, including taking part in the Foundation’s annual sleep-out at Celtic Park one year.

Now, Craig is moving on to a new chapter in his football career, rejoining Hearts, the club where he started.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: “Craig has been great for Celtic and I wish him nothing but success for the future. He is someone who has played a massive role in so many great moments for the club over a number of years and he deserves real thanks and congratulations for all he has given us.

“For club and country, Craig has always been a top professional and I am sure he will continue to enjoy success in his career. We wish him the very best.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “I would like to thank Craig sincerely for everything he gave to the club. Craig has been a tremendous servant to Celtic over a number of years and always given his best to the club.

"He has overcome some huge challenges in his career, showing real determination and courage. Throughout his time at Celtic delivered some brilliant performances. Ultimately, he has played a major role in delivering some major successes to the club and this is something we will always appreciate.

“Craig has always been an excellent professional and on behalf of everyone at the club, I wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Craig for his great contribution to Celtic over the past few years, and everyone wishes him well for the future.

Didn’t hang about there did he?!?

4k a week at Celtic fir never having to play a match... or Hertz where he’s presumably No1.. on less money :39:

Or is Crumple-face paying him more despite players all taking cuts and deferrals?

Good shot stopper with a tendency to create a calamity. Was a great free signing, done us a turn when we needed it and has definitely played his part in the run for 10IAR. Good move for him at this time as he will be in line for a starting slot ( it will be his to lose ).

Hearts are probably the best club for him at this stage in his career.. but he must wonder about that Chelsea move .. (most of us still wonder why a club like that would even think about signing him)

    Now just get Foster signed

For a team that claim they will lose millions from being relegated Hearts haven't had any problems in bringing in Neilson and Gordon, neither of whom will be cheap.

Wish him all the best, fantastic goalie for us, not many goalies will have 14 medals in the bag.

Good to see how involved he was with the Celtic Foundation.

One of the best goalies we've had especially considering he spent a good time here.

I wish him all the best. He pulled off some great saves and played in a lot of memorable games. He also had a couple of bomb scare moments. I think it's admirable he's moved to get game time rather than warm the bench. I hope it works out for him and he gets the Scotland recall he obviously wants. Thanks for what he did for us.

Forgot to say I love his celebration in that Invincible season, Iconic.

And aye, I saw the penalty, lol. And Celtic have posted it on their farewell message, some absolute pearler saves, forgot it was him that did that incredible double save.

Could always save reaction types. If he has to think he * it. Near post, penalties, 1on1 etc.

CRAIG GORDON aims to kill Celtic’s quadruple Treble dream by dumping them in the Scottish Cup final.

The veteran keeper, 37, has rejoined Hearts on a two-year deal.

SunSport exclusively revealed on June 11 that the Jambos were interested in snapping up the Scotland star on a free.

Now Gordon, who turned down the chance to stay at Celtic, is dreaming of a Hampden final with new boss Robbie Neilson’s side.

Hearts still have a semi-final clash against Hibs to play, while Celts will take on Aberdeen, with the SFA yet to confirm dates.

But asked about the prospect of potentially playing against Celtic in the final, Gordon said: “I’d feel great about it and I’d want to win, absolutely no problem.

I would be doing everything I could to win the game for Hearts and be successful for our team here.

“Everybody seems to worry about playing against ex-teams, but I would not worry.”

Gordon isn’t cup-tied as he was only involved in the 2019-20 competition for the Hoops as an unused sub.

He said: “I tried everything I possibly could when I was at Celtic to beat Hearts in those games and I would do exactly the same against Celtic now.

“I think people will look too much into that and say, ‘The player’s not being respectful’.

“But you must go out to try and win the game.

I’ve always done the best I possibly could in every single game to make sure my team wins.

“There would be absolutely no problem playing against Celtic and trying to beat them.

I’m sure their fans won’t be happy about it, but that’s just football.”

Gordon was offered the chance to stay at Celtic as a back-up goalie.

But it would have required him to take an 80 per cent wage cut.

Gordon said: “Things just petered out over the last few weeks.

“The one thing I always wanted to do was get back playing football. The money side was always going to be secondary.

"It was about doing what was right for me.

“Celtic have a big season coming up and they have a few decisions to make in the goal-keeping department.

“It’s up to them to make those decisions.

I didn’t feel I was a big priority there at this moment in time and that’s absolutely fine.

“That’s what happened last season when they wanted to keep Fraser Forster on.

“I had to make my decision for me. They will make their new signings and prepare for the season.

“For me, it was about doing what I wanted — get back playing football.

“I’ve got a fantastic opportunity back here at Hearts. I loved playing here before.

"I grew up as a supporter and to have the opportunity to come back at this stage in my career is something not many players get to do.

“I’m so grateful and happy to have that opportunity.

“Now I want to try and be as successful as we possibly can.

I just want to continue doing what I’ve done throughout my career.

"That is concentrating on myself and Hearts and trying to win games to achieve what we want to.

“It’s a really good time for me to come back. I feel everybody at the club is onside.

“People will look back and ask if Celtic made a mistake or not, but that’s for the future.

    “I’ll just concentrate on myself.

“I’ve spoken to the staff at Celtic and thanked them for their time and everything we managed to achieve together.

“That’s football, you move on. There’s nothing but respect both ways for the time we had together.

“There’s no bitter taste for me.”
