He scored against us quite a few times for the sheep. Hope that doesn't continue!

I remember in particular the goal in the 2017 Cup final when he gave them the lead. Thankfully his goals against us didn't lead to much for Aberdeen results wise.

Disappointed in this as a good utility player. I feel we are short in the left sided area now. Can only imagine board intend to bring in another squad filler on cheaper wages.

Former Celtic winger Jonny Hayes has agreed to return to Aberdeen despite late interest from Championship side Reading.

The 32-year old was a free agent after Celtic opted against offering him new terms earlier this month.

He will sign a two year contract on Monday as he prepares to add to his 207 appearances and 70 assists for Aberdeen.

The Irishman rose through Reading's under-18 side as a teenager but opted to stay in the SPL, aiming to replicate his 2016-17 season at Aberdeen.

Hayes fired in 11 goals and provided 24 assists before being snapped up by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

He couldn't make the same contributions in Glasgow while often being deployed at full-back but made 68 appearances as the Hoops stormed to three consecutive titles.

Looked inevitable... another club imposing serious pay cuts but still signing players...

Makes sense for him. He was a big player for them before so he should be able to settle right in.

Pleased for him, as he deserves a contract and job security after his time with us.
Can't help but feel, that this could bite us in the * though!

Hope I'm wrong, and he gets a decent reception from our supporters when we get an appropriate opportunity.

Jonny Hayes has today completed his return to Aberdeen.

The Republic of Ireland International winger, a firm favourite with the fans at Pittodrie first time around, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal.

From the outset, Jonny made clear his desire to return to Aberdeen, not only to fulfil his continued footballing ambitions, but also because of the strength of relationships he has maintained with the Club since he left.

As testament to the depth of feeling Jonny has for the Dons, he has also taken the decision to make a significant financial sacrifice in order to return to the North East. Given the challenging period the Club is currently facing, this was a substantial gesture which unquestionably enabled the deal to be completed.

Manager Derek McInnes is thrilled to see this familiar face back in his squad.

“Bringing Jonny back to the Club is fantastic. In light of the current financial circumstances as a result of the pandemic, this has only been possible due to Jonny being out of contract and his real desire to re-join Aberdeen.

“Jonny’s determination and willingness to return here is illustrated by his generous gesture to make it happen. He has never hidden his love for Aberdeen, and indeed I know his family enjoyed living in the North East, so it is no surprise to me that he was prepared to make a financial sacrifice in order to return.

“We sold Jonny to Celtic three years ago and he was a key player in our team, but he returns undoubtedly a better player for his experiences and will provide excellent cover in the left sided area of the pitch following Greg Leigh’s departure. I can’t wait to see him perform in our team once again.”

Jonny added, “It is exciting to be an Aberdeen player again. The Club has made real progress since I have been away, particularly with the building of Cormack Park which looks brilliant. It was a major attraction in returning and as soon as the manager phoned and said Aberdeen were interested it was always my preferred choice.

“We were then able to come to an agreement to make the deal happen which was suitable for all parties. I appreciate it is a tough time for the Club given the current climate with COVID-19 but everyone wanted to make it happen. I was more than happy to play my part by foregoing some financial gain and I am just thankful it was concluded positively.

“I want to come back and win some winners medals. I think everyone associated with Aberdeen deserves it. There have been a few near misses with some of the recent Finals, but it would be very nice to come back and win some trophies.”

Over five seasons at Pittodrie the winger made 207 appearances and played a key role in helping the team go from strength to strength under manager Derek McInnes. As well as picking up a winner’s medal in the 2014 League Cup final against his former side Inverness CT, that season he won the SPFL Goal of the Season award, one of many memorable strikes in an AFC shirt.

The wide man was then nominated for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year on two successive occasions, and named in the PFA Premiership team of the year in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

In 2015-16 he was named the AFC Player of the Year and Players’ Player, and the 2016-17 campaign was the most prolific of his five seasons with the Dons, netting on 11 occasions. In total he scored 30 goals.

The 32-year-old joined Celtic at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

Wish him all the best. Disappointed to see him go because I felt he was only just settling into being a Celtic player. I think he has even admitted himself that the jersey was too heavy from him at the beginning but he turned out to be a reliable back up player. His performance against Lazio away was outstanding.

But he is 32 and needs to make the most of the rest of his career. Hopefully he scores a couple against the Huns next year.

I had a look on soccerbase. He scored four times for Aberdeen against Celtic.

    The results were...

    Aberdeen 2-1 Celtic Feb 14
    Aberdeen 2-1 Celtic Feb 16
    Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic May 17
Aberdeen 1-2 Celtic May 17 (final)

Scored once for Celtic against Aberdeen (his first Celtic goal iirc) and scored twice v the Huns (once for Aberdeen in a 2-1 win, and of course at Ibrox for Celtic).

If they play the Semi-final of the Scottish cup will Hayes be able to play for Aberdeen or will he be cup tied as it is last season's competition
