I can't help but feel like in one game I was infected/recruited and was given no indication. And if it did happen, I also don't remember if it was intentional or a mistake.

That's possible, but if true It is highly unlikely I'd still be having positive investigative results. With the Cult leader gone, giving up another cultist would be suicide.

He evidently knew he was cult, whether he was turned from town or not. Can't really draw a conclusion not knowing his initial alignment.
