Seems the Japanese just didn't have sufficient 'flair' to beat the Springboks. Oh well...

South Africa came on here and read that Japan played basic rugby and that gave them the confidence to go and beat them :54:

    Noooooooo... !!!

Japan didn't just play 'basic' rugby (against Scotland), they played solid 'basic' rugby (against Scotland). There's quite the difference! And sadly, the Scots were set-up to perform in such a way that it became quite straightforward for the Japanese to tear them a new one.

Seems that a few observers took their eye off the calamitous Scottish 'defending' and took the ease with which the Japanese carved them open to herald the arrival of some kind of new-age rugby genius!

    Bollocks!

The Springboks now believe they can win the World Cup where in the last few World Cups they just hoped.
They are a real threat to the All Blacks Who themselves are going to inflict a massive defeat on the White Shirted Arrogant Machine.

The Springboks are a seriously powerful unit - I still think that the All Blacks have the game to trump them though.

The meaning of basic rugby grows arms and legs with every message.

Anyone thinking New Zealand are automatically into the final is being as arrogant as we accuse the English of being. Yes, they’re the better team but England are no mugs and will give them a * of a game.

South Africa to beat New Zealand in the final but lose to England in the final, whichever of those match ups happen.

My first post on the subject...

My last post on the subject...

I'd say I've been pretty consistent with my reasoning.

However, I've yet to hear a list of consistent examples of Japans 'fancy' playing style...

The only thing consistent is you saying the words “solid”, “basic” and “rugby”. There’s absolutely nothing behind it. No explanation. No reasoning. No logic. No sense.

... but I thought it was 'growing arms and legs'. Make yer mind up min!

It's simple... Japan beat Scotland by playing solid basic rugby. They didn't have many complicated, elaborate or particularly clever set plays, they didn't throw passes through their legs or behind their backs, they didn't have decoys running left right and centre, they didn't bombard Scotland with cross-field kicks. They just did the basics... and were super-disciplined and sure-handed when they did it... and this allowed them to pour through Scotlands comically awful defence (and apparently created the illusion - to some - that they were the Rugby equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters)!
