Spartak away was an absolutely massive result for those of us had seen some very good Celtic teams fail to win away in the groups.

And the squad Rodgers inherited, and the funds he was provided were well in advance of Lennon, but we seem to ignore that when looking at their domestic records.

I’m very unconvinced that Rodgers would’ve matched Lennon’s achievements in the CL if faced with the same group. We were usually beaten in the CL before we took to the park under Rodgers.

I'm gathering you've forgotten the games with AEK Athens then. Cause that mob were utter *, and we couldn't get past them them.

Spartan away for sure. Barcelona away as well, even though we lost.

I don’t think all losses are the same. Getting pumped 5/6-0 at home against the elite is very different from putting up a competitive performance.

We competed in every single group stage game that season. No going into games and rolling over to get our tummies tickled.

    Beat Spartak home and away.

Beat Barca at home and were 30 seconds away from a draw at the Nou Camp.

Drew with a decent Benfica side, lost by a single late goal in Lisbon. Who then went on to beat Leverkusen, Bordeaux and Fenerbahce on the way to the Europa League Final were they lost to an injury time winner for Chelsea

I agree it was a great night but was it really punching above our weight though?

They’re a team we’d have been thinking we actually could get an away result against as we’re of similar quality.

That last bit is a bit unfair.

I think it's very difficult to compare the two for a number of reasons. One of the main ones being their approach to the game.

There's no denying Rodgers was given the tougher draw both times looking at it plainly. It doesn't excuse some of the pumpings but it's still the case.

To get Man City, Barcelona and Gladbach and then the next year get PSG and Bayern is pretty insane. Anderlecht are the closest to the likes of Spartak.

The 13/14 season as well we were pretty gash in the CL. That home game against a pish AC Milan side for instance. Was as bad as a 5-0 at home against a top class PSG side.

I also wouldn't say the funds he was given were well in advance. Was he given more - yes. But I would be interested to see the total difference in fees spent between the two. The difference in funds certainly isn't enough to make much of a difference in CL performances anyway. Once you get to that level it's luck of the draw and the ability to be pragmatic.

That's where Rodgers fell down and it's where Lennon has him.

One result against one team does not qualify anyone to be judged as better or worse as a manager.

    Yes.

Anderlecht ( v 10 men) away got nothing

    Copenhagen away got nothing

That was a groundbreaking away moment for us (IMO)

If we waltzed into a group containing Barca, Benfica and Spartak again, I think that most rational people would accept that it is a far easier group than Barca, Man City and Gladbach.

In the same way that I think that PSG, Bayern and Anderlecht is a superior group to one containing a very poor AC Milan and Ajax.

Spartak aren’t a level above Celtic, for me, so I wouldn’t say we were punching above our weight in that one.

Milan, Barca, Bayern Man Utd, Juventus etc was us punching above our weight.

I agree. I don’t want Lenny as our next manager and think he has struggled to follow in the snake’s footsteps.
What I don’t like is the disrespect that’s being shown to him at the moment. It shouldn’t be forgotten that he did a good job first time around imo and it should also be remembered that, as a player, he was a major part of the best Celtic team I’ve seen.

But it does after losing to rangers for most fans

Just to add, I don't think Lennon should be manager.

You can't deny theres been a lot more noise in regards to him not getting the job.

Whilst I have faith in Lennon bringing in 10 in a row I don't think he will bring fresh ideas to the club. We are ahead of many teams in Scotland and the club needs to continue to evolve, not stand still. It takes a special manager to be able to reinvent themselves tactically time and time again. Unfortunately Lennon isn't one of these managers.
