I think we should give him a 1 year deal due to how unprepared we’ve been this past year or so.

Definitely sign a new first team RB as well though.

He’s obviously a big character in the team and loved by everyone, I’d give him another contract but only as a back up player, we need a quality right back in.

Give him the one year deal. Could be a handy player as back up RB and CB. We would still need 1 RB and 2 CBs (hopefully one of the RBs or CBs can play LB).

I agree, I'm not overly concerned about how much it'll cost because I doubt he's going to be pushing for big money, he appears to be in love with the club, I've said it before but he literally celebrates like a fan and it's infectious, as you say we need that around the club, our Swedish Bertie Auld, for sure he sings It's a Grand Old Team to Play For in the tunnel
If he scores against the huns and celebrates like this :humpani: in front of their dug out we should give him tenure, that would be some trophy.

I thought Toljan was going to progress, that is why I was so sure about Lustig staying, he was showing signs, then kinda just disappeared, well literally down Valencia's tunnel so that's a bummer because Dortmund back up quality is a decent level of player considering the budgets.

However it really increases the need for Mikel to stay, are we seriously thinking of punting him and securing both a first team and back up RBs who are both better than him?

@joemc Just seen what you said, basically that :50:

MIKAEL Lustig knows what it takes to win a Scottish Premiership medal – he now has eight of them, of course – and even though his first title back in 2012 was special, the Swedish internationalist believes this season’s title triumph feels even better.

The 32-year-old defender picked a great day to score his second goal of the season when he produced a superb diving header finish from a Callum McGregor cross five minutes before the break to give Celtic a 1-0 lead over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Second-half goals from Jozo Simunovic and Odsonne Edouard delivered a 3-0 win and the required points to secure an eighth league title in a row, and Lustig was delighted to play his part at a ground where he made his Celtic debut back in March 2012.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Lustig said: “I’ll probably celebrate this title more now. The first title was really special, but I think this one is even more special.

“It feels brilliant. I remember I made my Celtic debut here at Pittodrie a few years ago, so this was a special moment.

“We started quite well but then we let them in and, to be fair to Aberdeen, they had three or four really good chances, so the goal came at the perfect time. It was a great cross and a good header as well!

“It gets to near the end of the season and we’ve almost got our hands on the trophy but we knew we needed to get over the line. Everyone has worked really hard defensively and now we’re scoring goals as well, so it’s nice.

“It was all about our fans at Pittodrie and they gave everything for the full game, so hopefully they’re really happy too.”

Lustig was forced to come off in the last minute of the game with an injury scare, but he’s hoping that everything’s alright, with some big games ahead, including the Scottish Cup final on May 25.

It’s a game that he and all his team-mates will be determined to win when it comes around, following league games away to Rangers and at home to Hearts on the final day of the league season.

“In the past couple of years, we’ve been so consistent and we just take it one game at a time.” the Swedish defender said. “When the pressure is on, we play our best game and hopefully we can do it again.”

Would be very happy to see Lustig sign on for another year. We need to be on the look out for a long term replacement at right back no question but Lustig has been in good form recently and certainly can do a solid job there for the short term.

I've wanted rid of him for a decent while but to be fair to him he's probably been our best player over the last 7 or 8 games. He started to get forward again and compared to other players actually looks fresher and more energetic.

Not the long term answer but he has had a bit of a second wind for some reason.

Lenny plays him as an actual right back instead of a hybrid RB/CB, that’s pretty much it for me.

NEIL Lennon played alongside two men at Celtic who are widely considered to be among the best signings the Parkhead club have made in their entire 131 year history – Lubomir Moravcik and Henrik Larsson.

Yet, Lennon believes the capture of Mikael Lustig was every bit as shrewd as the acquisitions of his revered former team mates.

The right back netted a diving header against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday to send his side on their way to a 3-0 win that sewed up their eighth consecutive Ladbrokes Premiership victory and performed superbly during the course of the 90 minutes.

Lennon believes Lustig is deserving of the same legendary status as his fellow Swede Larsson at Celtic given what he has contributed since arriving on a Bosman transfer back in 2012.

“He is right up there in terms of great players at the club, isn’t he?" he said. "We got him on a free from Rosenborg. He’s played Champions League for us, got to the last 16 by helping us beat Barcelona.

“He’s done the lot. He’s won trebles, he’s been a Swedish international for a long time and has played at World Cups and the Euros. It was a fantastic piece of business for the club.”

The 32-year-old, who had fallen out of the first team before Lennon returned in February, is out of contract at the end of the season and his employers have not yet taken up the option of extending it for another year.

The defender and his representatives are currently in discussions with the Scottish champions about his future and no agreement has been reached. However, Lennon admitted he will be keen to keep him if he is asked to remain in charge going forward.

I know what he can do,” he said. “I know the personality of the man. He is very important in the dressing room. But first and foremost he is a quality player.

“He has had his injury problems due mainly to the cumulative effect of games over the past few years. He didn’t get much of a rest after the World Cup. But there is a player who has now won eight titles. It says it all. He is still contributing immensely to what we want to do here. He’s a brilliant player and a brilliant boy.

I would like to keep him. Mika will know more about his role as he gets older, but as a player he is very important to what has been done here over the last eight years."

Lennon admitted that Lustig, who had been replaced by Borussia Dortmund loanee Jeremy Toljan by his predecessor Brendan Rodgers, had been unsettled when he took over on an interim basis in February.

“I had to get his head back in place a little bit when I came in,” he said. “He was maybe looking elsewhere and we wanted to get him back into the team.

“It was a brilliant goal at Pittodrie - a brilliant ball from Callum (McGregor) and a great run and header from Mika. I think we can do that more often, be more purposeful and get the ball in behind defences quicker.”

Lennon admitted that he would like to give Lustig, who only got a fortnight off after representing his country at Russia 2018 last summer, and some of his other regular starters some time out now the league has been won.

“Some of them do need a rest,” he said. “Whether we can do that is another matter. Kieran is going through the same thing as Mika with injury. We may look at that over the next couple of weeks, but we obviously have the cup final in the horizon as well.

“When I came in, we had 11 players injured. That was very difficult to gauge but then we started getting some back.

We’ve had a lot of injuries, a lot of them rehabbing and breaking down again, a lot of players going through the mill for the club. They need a break, there is no question about that.

“You also have to remember the loss of Brendan would have been huge to the players as well, not just the club or supporters. It was a different voice coming in almost immediately and that takes a bit of adjusting to.”

In footballing terms I've been a big critic of his, and rightly so. He's been phenomenal since he got back into the side though.

Which just goes to show how important it is to have competition for places. We had it spot on in the invincibles season. Every player had to maintain top form otherwise somebody could replace them. We've lost that the last 2 years, too much reliance on the likes of KT, Tam, Forrest, Sinclair, Eddie that as soon as they lose form (or get injured) we look toothless.

Mika is a far better player than Toljan by the looks of it, but you had to get Jeremy in to see it. Get the mad sexy swede on a 1 year deal and sign a decent RB to fight for the spot. Same with LW, CAM and LB.

As much as he's turned it round in the last few months and put in some very good performances, I think it's perfect time for him to leave on a high.

He's been a great servant but I still think we need a RB with a better engine that can get up in support and also back to defend (was miles out of position for McKenna to go on his 60 yard run and cross to Cosgrove)

Defenders know he isn't going to knock the ball by them to get to the bye-line and can push tight on him as a result. It leads us to becoming too predictable at times, particularly domestically.

I’d rather he left on a high too, but I don’t fancy Ralston as our back up RB (assuming Gamboa goes). Keeping him for another year relieves the club of the burden, of trying to sign two good right backs in the same window.

    Agree with this 100%.
We know his best days are behind him, but resigning allows us a few more months to secure his replacement.
In the meantime he will still offer enough against most domestic teams.

Besides this, his Mrs is stunning!
