The reason there is no sectarian chanting at scotland games is beacause there are never rangers players in the squad as they seem to be very injury prone in and around international dates.

The reason Ireland is so bitter is due to a hatred that has been beating into them by other forces

 

Lafferty is pish plus he's a hun, so relieved he's where he belongs.

 

Got to admit though Lafferty is probably ever bit as good as Samaras is if not better even though hes a hun. Still means hes * though

 

Fair enough but this was really young Dublin lads whose only experience of the troubles is on the telly or what their great grandad told them. They as individuals have no reason to be bitter towards Britain. I can understand northern Irish being bitter because they really experienced the troubles but not the armchair generals who just see it on the telly. Its crazy to be bitter about stuff 90+ years ago when you are only around 18 unless you have a victim complex.

To be fair, I have to say the guys I heard were perhaps a particularly rough bunch of young neds and not at all like the overwhelming majority of southern Irish folk I have met. I was genuinely surpised to hear this sort of stuff at an international match, particulary one between the two Gaelic sister countries. Just daft young lads trying to get a rise but still surprising and it put into perspective the fact that there was still a sectarian element in the Scotland support until 20 years ago which is often raised by Celtic fans. That has been completely iradicated in recent decades so it can become a thing of the past.

Its international rivallry and tongue in cheek. No blood has been shed between Scotland and England in several hundred years so its really just cartoon stuff. Rabidly anti-English people like the poet McGlashin in Absolutely are figures of comedy and rare. Nobody remembers anyone who was harmed in 1314 and nobody really takes it seriously. Its too long ago to be personal. Many country had a bad element but Scotland has really stamped it out in the tartan army which is self policing on the matter of sectarianism much as Celtic fans have also done in recent years

The point about the Ireland match was some British players got OK treatment but others got grief over percieved political/religious allegance. It wasnt just a straight one country banter against another. It was more complex than that with echos of internal divisions within Ireland, internal politics and echos of religious/cultural rivallry and dragged club football into an international arena.

I dont want to get into a huge debate on this as it was probably just a small minority of wee neds that I had the bad luck to be surrounded by. I just brought it up because I get frustrated by automatically really bad vibes that go towards anything or anyone with a Northern Irish protestant connection (as happened earlier in the thread). Its based on pure ignorance and stereotype. That fella who happend to be a Celtic and Northern Ireland supporter (rare but I have met some before) was automatically pounced on as if it was some crime to support Northern Ireland. Some of the nicest people I have met happen to support Northern Ireland because they just so happened to be born there and just so happened to be born into an area/community within Northern Ireland where it was natural to do so/didnt have a realistic alternative. There are plenty of decent Northern Ireland supporters although I am not denying there is still a bad element.

The bad old days of selection biase have been over since 1970 and the small bad element in the Scotland support were well on their way out about 20 years ago. The match I was talking about was nowhere near as long ago as that. Think it was about 5 or 6 years ago now. Anyway as I said to Martin, I only brought this up because people have a far too much of a black view of the Northern Ireland support based on the worst element. Its not right to treat the guy who posted as some sort of leper because he supports a particular international team. He was very reasonable. Most international teams have good and bad elements although the proportion varies dramatically.

 

yep but thats just international rivalry between two seperate countries. It not a division among actual Scots. Its not a civil conflict that drags religion and political stance into it and echos live everyday divisions within the country. The Tartan Army are very very tongue in cheek, possibly the daftest (in a good way) support in Europe. So many of the songs have self-deprication.

 

Course that was shameful but it does matter that one incident was well in the past and widely acknowledged to be totally a thing of the past among the tartan army. People keep dragging up stuff from 20 years back or in the case of team selections, nearly 40 years back. No point in protesting about a problem that has been solved/removed. There is absolutley no resemblance between even 20 years back and the last decade or so. Times have moved on thank *. Even if a bad element had remained I wouldnt let that drive me away. They win that way. Your national team is to important to hand over to neds. Thankfully that didnt happen and virtually all the bad element have gone and the good guys won the day.

 

LAFFERTY COMPLETES RANGERS MOVE

Rangers have clinched the signing of Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty for a fee in excess of £3million.
Northern Ireland international Lafferty, 20, has signed a five-year contract with the Scottish Cup and CIS Insurance Cup holders.
The deal went through despite Alan Gow's move to Burnley remaining in the balance. The Rangers forward, whose move was initially part of a part-exchange for Lafferty, has still not agreed the terms of his move to Turf Moor.

Lafferty had also been interesting Celtic but they failed to agree a fee with Coca-Cola Championship side Burnley for the highly-rated youngster. Wolves were also keen but were also outbid.

He becomes the third striker to agree a summer move to Rangers, and the most expensive.

Kenny Miller clinched an Ibrox return last week in a £2million switch from Derby, and former Hearts forward Andrius Velicka will return to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League after Rangers agreed a fee of around £1million with Viking Stavanger for the Lithuanian. That deal will be completed next month.

Lafferty is relishing his move to Rangers and admitted he thought the chance had passed him by.
He told Home | Rangers "I'm delighted to be here. The move has been a long time in coming and I'm thrilled to be at the club at last.
"When I heard Rangers were looking at me, I really wanted to join them but there was a point when I thought they had lost interest.

"I heard nothing from them so I was worried the move wouldn't happen and I was delighted when my agent rang me to say Burnley had accepted the bid for me.
"Hopefully I can now show the fans what I can do on the pitch. All of my mates and family are big Rangers fans so they're pleased I'm at the club now."
Lafferty only scored five league goals for Burnley last season but he is considered one of Northern Ireland's hottest prospects in years and will challenge the likes of Kris Boyd, Jean-Claude Darcheville and Nacho Novo, plus his two fellow new boys, for a place in Walter Smith's Rangers attack next season.

He admits it was the night of the UEFA Cup final which convinced him he should sign for Rangers, if the opportunity came up.
"I was at the final in Manchester and the atmosphere there was incredible," he said.
"That helped me make up my mind that I wanted to play for Rangers. The fans were amazing then and playing in Europe is a big attraction for me.
"I want to play at that level and I'm being offered that here."
