And a lot has changed since then, back then we could compete financially with big teams in bigger leagues. You have to move with the times or be left behind.

To field a team of top class experienced at their peak players your talking money we don't have now , we can't go to epl and take equivelant Sutton,Hartson,Thompson and Lennon. they have 30m players on their benches.

And we couldn't afford any of those players in the current market, the game has changed too much.

We're barely even a big fish in a small pond anymore, more like a big fish in a bowl of *.

Indeed. But would you say we have successful adapted with the modern game? I wouldn't.

There really appears to be no appetite to implement a structure which would at least untie one of our arms on the European stage. Instead, it's the same old loans and cheap panic buys once Lawwell feels a bit of heat.

Any person with the obscene amount of cash that they could throw at celtic and have the clubs best interests at heart does not exist, desmond there for will remain and he has done alot for this club imo, some foreigner with 20 billion would destroy the club, one day the bubble will burst on these money spinning leagues and celtic will be in good shape.

We could afford to pay all thoes players(about 20 years ago) a lot more than we pay them now

Press story :James Forrest on Evertons radar " is at the prime of his career, scoring goals for fun and creating chances for his team-mates, and whilst he’s likely to be available for £10million, that hardly represents a risk for a club with Everton’s financial muscle....this says it all, financial muscle..... £10m is f all to an EPL side in fact fkn Huddersfields record signing is £18m.....no way can Celtic compete at this level

Aye but are they any good or as Bertie Auld famously once said about Inter Milan looking the part....aye...but can they play ??? : I believe a lot of the £20 - £30 m bracket players in EPL arent that great, their prices are inflated in a money saturated league

Nah tons of mediocrity in that league , they got Van Dijk and Wanyama on the cheap. mediocrity watching games too a lot of the time apart from the big games.

If we bought players in the £10M range every other transfer window, we would not be in trouble.

Then it all comes down to scouting as we would have to go abroad for players

Wages are more the issue than a one off transfer fee, how much higher do we take our wage bill and what's sustainable long term. How much more can/should we be spending considering we're already double the huns and 10x the average of the rest of the league?

We are not in trouble domestically, we should however be up for a good euro run as champions league is way beyond us now

Bring it up another 40 K, if that's what it takes to be a Champions League regular fixture.

it's a balancing act though say you miss out ?those fixtures aren't guaranteed with 4 qualifiers.
if you keep invest 10m signings and wages. we just sell a player though.

This argument could be flipped: what if we had invested massively in the defense these last 2 years? CL money could've covered for the expenses of a strong CB and RB. Also, each win in CL adds more money. If we go through, the cash keeps rolling in.

    We should gamble.

We only spent 2m on Bayo in January the rest loans and Sold Dembele' for 20m at end of summer window, so the next manager should have decent funds , but the squad is bloated a bit and needs trimmed.

No we shouldn't. Pick any number of examples in the last 20 years not to do that. Rangers, Fiorentina, Leeds, Portsmouth.

What we could do is take more calculated risks and find a better balance. Hoarding cash while the team on the park struggles against teams with a comparative budget is a terrible strategy in both a business and football sense.
