Had a cold over the past week so been doing light workouts. Taking the dog a long walk today then going to the gym afterwards.

I only do cardio and endurance weights at the gym. Can anyone recommend some free weights I can buy for the house and some different exercises I can do for starters ??

What about weights to buy though? Where’s the best place to get them online?

I use We R Sports for my stuff. Cheaper than some places and for a home gym it’s perfect.

Pair of squat stands to use for bench press and squats (make sure they do actually adjust properly)
    Bench (with decline and incline)
    Barbell
    EZ bar
    Dumbbells
    I also have :
Ab straps for hanging knee raises
Wrist straps for deadlifts / shrugs
    A Swiss ball

In terms of weights, if you are new to it all, as in a proper beginner, a 40kg or 50kg set will do you. Usually they come in packs which include a barbell and dumbbells. A standard 1 inch, 6 foot bar weighs around 7kg, so remember that when you start working out.

At this level you are fine with 1 inch diameter bars and weight plates. You may see Olympic size stuff when you shop around, this is not really what you need for a home gym when starting out.

Have you got a spare room or is it stuff you want to be able to stick in a cupboard ?

    @Outlaw King

Have you looked on gumtree or facebook marketplace ? Can get them far cheaper than buying new. Not as if anybody will see them so doesn't matter what condition they're in.

Just came in here to ask about home gym equipment and see it's already being discussed!

I'm going to clear out the garage and start a home gym. Defaulted to Argos and had a look at Gumtree as well, think I'll start with one of the Multi Gyms and then add free weights and kettlebells etc... until I convince the missus about a treadmill and rowing machine.

Going to have a look at your suggestion just now @Marty McFly . Is a 70kg Multi Gym a decent starting point or should I be looking at bigger? I was massively into lifting at 16/17/18 but that's half a lifetime ago now.

A pull up bar is also a decent thing to have. Just make sure you take it down when you're finished. Walked into mine and it fell and cracked my tele.

Aye mate 70kg is just fine if you’re getting back into things. 4 sets of 10 reps of 70kg of any exercise will get you going!

As you improve again, that’s when to look at free weights and spend your hard earned on weight plates and bars

Also, my gym flooring was cheap as chips on eBay, loads of sellers do it.

Excellent that was my next question. One of my uncles has the snap fit rubber flooring stuff he got from Costco. I presume that’s the best bet?

Aye the rubber stuff is probably better for a garage. I have the hard foamy ones as it’s on a carpet indoors, does the job for that. You’ll want it more robust on the concrete

Ta. I’m a bit cautious about what to do and how much, especially considering I’ve never done any weights except resistance stuff!

Where did you get your pull up bar mate. I used to have one that fit perfectly in my last house but then I moved and this one doesn't really suit the door frames in this house.

I’ve got this one. Used to use it in our old gaff but since we moved 4 year ago not been allowed to use it here.

It actually popped a hole in the plaster :56: now that I’ve sold it to you, you want it?

Honest mate don't buy a multigym , a power rack , barbell, plates and dumbells is all you need.

A multigym is good for cables for back exercises but pressing on one is asking for an injury as it's 1 plane of motion. Plus free weights works stabilizers , core etc

Pick up a power rack on gum tree or ebay you won't regret it
