We couldn't do it except by playing ugly and playing dirty. The Huns reached a EL final with the Cardigan's extremely ugly cross of "park the bus", "kick 'em off the park" and catenaccio. I was in Spain when they did that and watched their final on Spanish television. The Spanish commentators were embarrassed for them.

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy the excitement if we did that; but I prefer Brendan's swashbuckling double (or hopefully treble) treble.

It is. Hence why in my post to Paul I prefaced "he'll go in the summer" with "I think".
Trust me, you will not be any happier than me if next August I have to come on here and apologise for talking * as Brendan guides us to number 9.

But you also said people you respect told you he 'will' be off. What do they know that we don't?

That isn't a horrible thing imo. We could be set up to be frustrating and very hard to beat in Europe, then stay the same we are just now domestically. I'm very much in the win at all costs camp, and if we look good doing it then that's a bonus.

One who is generally pretty accurate said their hunch was that he'd be off. The other (who I trust) said that he knew some rumours about last summer were true.

I'd rather we did both too; but that's not an option, because Brendan won't change. We have to choose and personally I much prefer Brendan over a green and white Walter Smith.

The problem with that is it’s hard to adjust mentalities on a whim.
Lennon and Strachan had us set up for doing well in Europe but at the same time we were ugly, boring and frustrating domestically as well.
Lennons first season apart where we played some of the best football I have ever seen from us generally we were pragmatic and while it helped against better teams against St Mirren or ICT it makes you lose the will to live.

You can’t have a team set up with mentality to play one way on a Tuesday and another on the Saturday.
You have players who will be better suited to that system and will struggle with the other.
It’s not football manager and changing a team is achieved with simply picking a pre selected tactic.

Brendan is a domestic machine , old firm games and trophies and that's our bread and butter anything achieved in europe is just a bonus, the financial gap over european football is there for all to see nowadays too and only getting worse. people can pay 96m for pogba's and 40m subs but are they worth that ? no but they're better players than we have by a distance.

you can't possibly hope to build a strong european team either when every year we sell our best players just a fact.

    That old chestnut.

We are talking about competing with teams who have similar wage budgets to us and spend less on transfer fees - not Man Utd or Real Madrid ffs.

Porto and Benfica seem to manage it. It's all about reinvesting well, which is the part we've been missing since Congerton was put in charge of our scouting.

Im not suggesting it's easy but most teams don't always set up the exact same way regardless of who they play. Which is exactly what we do, only time we seem to change formation is when we are forced to due to injuries.

it's easier said than done we sold van Dijk now one of the best centre halfs in the world , we can never replace and haven't same with Dembele. but if you keep them then it's a different story and build.

Salrzburg built their team from buttons. The only expensive player they had was the striker who was about 6 mill. I know they will be on decent wages but it doubt their wage bill is close to being double ours.

They might be red bull but it still doesn't change the fact that they are having good success relative to what they spend. We spent more on transfers than they have.

To be pretty fair though, we have been somewhat dull, boring and pedestrian for a fair bit of this and last season's league campaigns.

BR will only leave if and when he decides and rightly so..

It's always a gamble when getting a new manager in, especially if went down the foreign route. Only Wim Jansen has delivered any real success, Ronny couldn't really fail to win the league..

I understand the frustration, but I can't understand wanting rid if our most successful manager since Stein..

Defensive football doesnt need to be necessarily violent and horrible to watch. The same way as tiki taka, which is offensive football in name, is the most coward and boring brand of football. A team can set up to defend, have swift counter attacks, bravery and precision with tackling, and be a thousand times more positive to watch than 70% possession with passing to the side

The last game against sevco was atrocious and it was mostly his fault
