I´m Roman Catholic and haven´t been in Church for a long time. Had to go to Church 1-2 times a week when I was in school which also was Catholic and had a lot of nuns

the poll options are just a bit skewed towards catholicism lol. Im from a half catholic half presbyterian background. Got to be honest, having experienced a bit of both, I much prefer the presbyterian approach. Its much more strict about what is believed having to be in the bible itself and less about cermony and tradition.

For those who asked in this thread, thats the real crux of a difference with catholicism. Protestantism was all about cutting out the non-bibilical traditions that had been invented in the Medieval period and getting back to the basics - the bible. Presbyterianism was just a particularly strict version of this. The other thing that sets presbyterianism apart from catholicism and anglicanism is the democratic use of moderators as leaders who are voted in to hold office for a short time. There is no hierarchy equivelent to bishops etc. There is no permanent post higher than an oridinary mininster. Its actually a very admirable system. Another big protestant idea that I dont think catholics often understand is that the church is not so important in itself. The protestant idea is really that all you really need is a one to one relationship with * and a bible with no go-between needed. The clergy are nowhere near as important as they are in catholicism.

Presbyterainism is also tough because to a degree presbysterains are expected to really live out the good-living life as portrayed in the bible by Jesus. Got to admit it troubles me a little how a number of the catholics I know can go to chapel a fair bit but do not live a christian life at all on an every day basis. Seems a bit hypocritical and pointless to me. Church attendance in itself is meaningless IMO if you dont live it to some degree and commit most of the 12 deadly sins on a regular basis. Ditto confession if you keep doing the same sins. I think catholicism can often have a lot to do with community, comfort and habit. People from a presbyterian background seem to be a bit more black and white - they either go to church and are very good living (small numbers) or they just dont beleive and so never go to church (most).

IMO, the big downside of presbyterians is because they feel they are the purest form of christianity (i.e. one thats strictly bible based) and feel they are right they can (more a case of used to) have a bad attitude to other religions, especially catholicism and in general used to be intollerant. I understand historically where a lot of where the bigotry comes from but it is wrong. By condeming and judging others they are breaking one of the biggest rules of christianity.

I just dont get religion tbh, but each to their own.

One of the most confusing things about Religion to me is how many many people have been killed in the name of religion, from the Spanish Inquisition, the conquering of new worlds in south america to Pogroms in Russia, the Holocaust , the palestinian issue and the rise of Muslim extremism.

I love the fact that Celtic is a club open to all......

rosario most of that is not related to religion.

palestinian issue has * all to do with religion and ill say it the holocaust either. It was about the jewish ethnicity in hitlers eyes not because they didnt follow christianity. the holocaust was not at all about religion it was about purifying the aryan race and irradicating those the * felt were inferior beings. judaism, slavs, gypsies..

I studied nazism under a jewish professor so dont think this is anything at all anti-semetic.this was his opinion too.. ts just the facts of the reason behind the holocaust.

Atheist and proud. How anyone can believe in any form or religion is beyond me. With everything else in life we need proof, some concrete evidence that what we're looking at is "real" but with religion we are just supposed to believe that there's this omnipotent being kicking about in the universe that created the world and everyting in it, has a vested interest in all things human, can even read our thoughts! And woe and betide anyone who goes against what this * wants and commits a "sin" which will be rewarded with a trip to * or at least a few thousand years in purgatory.
If the * that most religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) essentially believe in really existed, namely Jahweh from the old testament then we're all *! Cos he had to be the most unpleasant character ever created! Jealous, a petty unforgiving control freak, a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, megalomaniacal, sado-masochistic malevolent bully!
