BRENDAN Rodgers has always believed if a player if good enough they are old enough. With a caveat.

If that young talent isn’t prepared to go that extra few thousand vile, if they are not ready to learn and do quickly and without question and knows that being good with a ball on his feet isn’t close to being it, then the are good enough. Maybe.

The Celtic manager believes there are kids at his club who could be knocking on the door of the first-team very soon. But that’s not enough. Not to make it at that club.

Your talent takes you to a certain level and then can you become a working talent is the question,” said Rodgers. “That is being professional, improving your lifestyle, improving your technique.

“It is not easy at a big club. It is why so many players at the big clubs fall away. At the big clubs you go into training and every day the training is faster, it is quicker, it is bigger demands but we have young players coming in who are doing very well with that.

“Mikey Johnson and young Ewan Henderson coming in. He has a great view of the game tactically. His vision of the game, he can play with good players. It is just time. He just needs time.”

Rodgers will give time to these two, and Anthony Ralston, but the goal is a lot more will follow Kieran Tierney, Callum McGregor and James Forrest.

Celtic have done a good job in recent years in producing players for their own first-team and, indeed, other clubs. There are many players in Scotland who began their professional careers at Celtic.

Asked if the supporters will see more of their own being given a chance, Rodgers said: “I hope so. That is always the vision. Out three points was to win titles, play attacking football to win and bring through many players as possible from the Academy.

“If you look at Ewan Henderson coming into the game the other night, I have been so impressed with him as a player. He is working on his intensity in the game in terms of his pressing

This is something you have always got to get into young players. They have to understand it is not just about looking good, you have to be aggressive. He is a huge talent but it is maturation and sometimes that may mean going out of here. But the talent is there absolutely.

As you say Mikey has broken in and then been unfortunate and there might be a few others.

BR: "We know all about Tommy’s team. They’ve always provided a difficult test. The last time we played very well against them and it was probably a catalyst for both teams. We know they’ll be looking to get back on track again after conceding."

BR: "You have to approach each game on its own merit. For us, this is our game in hand so we want to take advantage of it at home."

BR: "In my time here we’ve lost one domestic home game in two-and-a-half years. We love playing at home. Our job is to entertain supports. It’s been slightly more difficult for us this season but you always want to make sure you're strong and focused at home

BR: "At this point in the season, to have a six point lead would be great but we have to earn that."

BR: "There’ll be lots of twists in turns before the season is over so all we can do is prepare our own game to ensure we can continue to be as successful as we have been."

BRENDAN Rodgers last night expressed sympathy with Neil Lennon and claimed that managers were more vulnerable to the sack now than at any stage in the past.

Lennon was suspended by Hibernian on Friday amid reports of a dressing room revolt after a disappointing run of results and friction with the members of the Easter Road board.

Rodgers, his Celtic counterpart, paid a glowing tribute to what his predecessor had achieved during his two-and-a-half years at the Edinburghclub.

The Northern Irishman declined to comment on his countryman’s situation without knowing the specific details.

However, the 45-year-old, who has led the Parkhead club to back-to-back trebles, claimed that his profession was more precarious now than ever before.

“I am disappointed for him,” he said. “I know him well as a person and then within football. I messaged him, but I haven’t spoken with him.

“It’s a situation that I don’t know all the details of so I would hate to throw something out there that’s not right.

“What he has done for that club has been amazing. If it ends as it looks like it might then it is a real sad end to what was a great partnership there.

If they do end up going their separate ways then it’s an unbelievably sad situation for both because he is an outstanding manager and Hibs are a fantastic club.

“Neil is a top class manager and has shown that. He has a passion for football. For me, the thing that gets lost with Lenny is that he’s a really bright guy.

“People see him jumping up and down and think of him that way. But he knows the game, he knows the game inside out.

"He's got an intelligent approach to it. He's aggressive in his game and his teams play that way. He's first class. But it all depends on what the owners want."

Rodgers added: “The problem is that the most vulnerable person in an organisation is the manager. It never used to be the case.

“Players who aren’t playing will be after him, some people at the club will be after him, supporters will be after him, so will the media

What used to be the position of power is now arguably the most vulnerable at the club.

“I have been managing over ten years now and 25 as a coach and it has totally changed. The mentality of players has and that is because society is different now.

“The world has changed and football has changed. It used to be that if you got bollocked a number of years back that you wanted to show the manager was wrong.

“You would still have respect for him and you got on with it. He was only doing it to push you and make you better. Now players will crumble and go away.”

Reports claim that tempers flared when Lennon spoke to his players in the aftermath of their 1-0 defeat to Motherwell last week.

"It's exactly the same as we do here," said Rodgers. "We highlight areas where we could be better. Otherwise how do you improve?"

Brendan Rodgers has conceded that any further new arrivals at Celtic before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline are likely to be loan deals.

And while the Celtic manager has been frustrated so far in his efforts to get a right-back in place, Rodgers has maintained that he is reluctant to jeopordise the financial stability of the club.

The Parkhead side have signed Vikoun Issouf Bayo as well as Maryan Schved while Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah have joined on short-term deals from their respective parent clubs until the end of the season.

Celtic were last night linked with a loan deal for Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan while Fulham teenager Tyrese Francois has also been scouted by the Parkhead side.

But while it is increasingly difficult for Celtic to compete in the current economic climate given the bloated transfer fees and salaries south of the border, Rodgers has insisted that it has not deflected from what he has set out to do.

“There is a squad here who have been highly successful but you always have to evolve and thet best time to do that is when you are succeeding,” he said. “It’s a challenge but most Scottish teams will find that.

“To bring in a big player on a big salary is very difficult. There is a level you can’t reach without putting your club at huge risk. That’s just the reality of where it’s at.

“It’s still an incredible league to come to. There’s a lot of negativity around the transfer window but you need to have that resourcefulness to maximise what you have. You always have to push to get the best players you possibly can.

I’ve always tried to be philosophical about it without getting too dragged down by it. I go back to the players you can afford to bring in and trying to make them better.”

Maryan Schved is expected to go back out on loan when he formalises his deal with the club and Rodgers has insisted that the long-term picture has to be kept in mind when it comes to bringing players in.

“The work has been ongoing and we are hopeful we can do something,” he said. “It’s very difficult, but it has been pressing for quite some time.

“The club have every right to plan forward. There are lots of young players here now who are more for the future.

“But we have to win games now and progress now, so hopefully we can do that.

“If you look at a lot of the players here, they have got improved contracts and become better players. They get paid better. That’s brilliant for them and the club because they keep improving.

“To bring in players over the top of them, that costs money. That’s the Catch 22 situation

BRENDAN Rodgers is optimistic he can strengthen his Celtic squad further before the January transfer window closes tomorrow night – but stressed the Parkhead club won’t jeopardise their financial stability by spending big money.

Rodgers, whose side is bidding to win a treble treble and is also in the last 32 of the Europa League, is interested in taking Borussia Dortmund right back Jeremy Toljan until the end of the season and has been linked with Fulham teenager Tyrese Francois.

Toljan, the former Germany Under-21 internationalist who joined Dortmund from Hoffenheim in a £6 million transfer in 2017, has fallen out of favour at the Westfalenstadion under their new Swiss coach Lucien Favre and has been told he can go out on loan.

The Northern Irishman, who has already signed Vakoun Issouf Bayo and Maryan Shved and brought in Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah on loan this month, is keen to increase his options as Celtic bid to land their eighth consecutive Ladbrokes Premiership title.

Speaking ahead of the rearranged Premiership match against St Johnstone at Parkhead tonight, Rodgers admitted that he was looking to bring in more new faces.

“The work has been ongoing and we are hopeful we can do something,” he said. “It’s very difficult, but it has been progressing for quite some time.

“There are lots of young players here now who are more for the future. The club have every right to plan forward. But we have to win games now and progress now, so hopefully we can do that.

“You always have to push to get the best players you possibly can. But to bring in a big player on a big salary is very difficult. There is a level you can’t reach without putting your club at huge risk. That’s just the reality of where it’s at.

“You can do good business in January. Up here, January is a very pressurised window, especially if you are going for a title after which you are straight into Champions League qualifiers in the June. So the focus is really on you this month to get some players in.”

Rodgers admitted that he could lose key personnel, as he did during the summer when Moussa Dembele was sold to French club Lyon for £20 million, in the final hours of the transfer window tomorrow.

“There is always that possibility,” he said. “You can try and plan for that, but there are some things you just can’t forecast, like Moussa at the end of the last window. That was an unfortunate situation, but he had to move on in the end.

“The club benefited, which is great, but it’s not ideal in terms of squad preparation. We never thought we were going to lose him, we thought it would be in the summer.

“It’s a window where we want to strengthen, we certainly don’t want to weaken the squad. All the players here, I expect to stay. If we can get one or two in, it would help to make us strong. There are some areas we are looking at.”

Buying a RB for £3m/£4m is hardly going to make us financially unstable.

Rodgers just needs to shut his mouth tbh. Stop fooling the fans. We're not imbeciles ffs..
We've hardly spent anything for years, took in about 25m last summer, yet one player on a big wage would put the club at huge risk ?..
