    Both out and out old school central defenders though. Virgil has more to his game and is the dream modern CB. For me he’s the best and will only get better. Chiellini and Godin aren’t getting any younger either.

    2 of the best defenders ever without doubt though, so for VVD being mentioned in the same breath is some achievement in itself.

    I'm firmly in the VVD is the best defender in the World camp.

    Chiellini and Godin both world class, without a doubt, but in Van Dijk you have someone who is not only just coming into their prime but he's tearing up the Premiership and Europe whilst smoking a cigar.

    He's without a doubt the best ball playing defender in the world. He could probably play in every outfield position if you needed him to aswell.

    Dont know if you mean as in his style of play, or actual direct goal involvement, because his goal scoring is the only really thing he hasn't hit his potential heights at Liverpool.

    Still time left in the season, but Terry would often get 6/7/8 over the course of 4 competitions.


    I would rank his (Godin) natural defensive game higher, he doesn't have the VVD recovery pace/height/strength to offset any poor positioning or play - Not that it should really be used against VVD.

    Horses for courses, VVD suits the Liverpool game to a tee and they shouldn't or wouldn't want to switch him for anyone and likewise with A.Madrid/Simeone.

    Aye of course Godín is a better natural “defender” but VVD is more than that and is much better suited to the modern game. Godín amd Chiellini seem to be the last of the real old school defenders.

    Indicative of the type of team either played in more than on VVD's ability to score goals. Chelsea under Mourinho far more reliant on set piece goals than the current Liverpool side who are a pure footballing side.

    Celtic fans? A recent player of ours is now arguably the best defender in the World.

    Ramos is a *. Dirty, sly, cheating *. The antithesis of a Godin or Chiellini. Hard but fair, proper old school style. I’d have VVD when he was with us before Ramos.
