It wouldn’t bother me if we were to miss out on McGinn, but I’m glad that he’s putting his foot down with regard to transfers generally.

Personally I agree about McGinn - I don't think he's worth 2 million - let alone what Hibs are asking. However, BR couldn't have made it clearer that he wants McGinn and if we don't get him due to being tight (as opposed to an English club putting in a ridiculous offer) then he won't be happy.

If we get him, then its up to BR to show that he is worth the money. However, given what BR has done for the club, I think he has earned that right.

I'm concerned about the Boyota situation though. IMO - there is no chance of him signing a new deal. I can see what BR is saying about not having a replacement but if we keep him - I think he'll go for a pittance in Jan or nothing next summer.
    I think we're going to lose 9 - 10 million here.

There's no doubt that the board have truly f***ed this transfer window up - I think this will be BR's last season with us.

Brendan Rodgers fears Celtic will go backwards unless the Parkhead club move to make some quality signings.

Sportsmail understands the champions want to take Belgian defender Jason Denayer on loan for a second spell. They have also opened talks with fans' favourite Emilio Izaguirre over a shock return as cover for Kieran Tierney.

And they are refusing to give up their pursuit of John McGinn after matching Aston Villa's £2.7million bid.

Speaking before Wednesday's Champions League third-round qualifier against AEK Athens, however, Rodgers echoed the frustration of supporters over the lack of new faces so far.

Highlighting Celtic's financial strength after two years of Champions League football, the manager said: 'My role in the summer was clear; to keep the players that were here. And, at the very minimum, replace the players we lost and where we might need improving.

'So we did the first part with Kieran (Tierney) and Tom (Rogic). Tom re-signed, which is great. We sign Odsonne (Edouard), which is a no-brainer

But there are still a few key areas where I want to bring in quality and, thus far, we haven't completed on it.

'Not a lot of players, but we needed quality. And that is something we haven't got in the building yet to add to the quality already here.

'You have to do that when you are in a strong position. I am not sure the club has been in a stronger position this summer than what they have been for quite some time.'

Celtic have earned around £60m from successive qualifications for the Champions League since Rodgers arrived two years ago.

Parkhead sources insist nothing has changed in the club's transfer policy, pointing to the manager's public satisfaction with the backing in the last two transfer windows.

In an acute change of tone, however, Rodgers admitted he fears a process of stagnation unless signings arrive soon.

'Absolutely, 150 per cent. We need to complete deals. It is as simple as that. One is identifying the players - which we do - and then get them over the line.

Sportsmail understands Rodgers wanted right back Cristiano Piccini from Sporting Lisbon before the Italian joined Valencia in a £7m deal.

And on Tuesday night Celtic matched Aston Villa's bid for McGinn in an attempt to avoid a repeat. They believed they had a verbal agreement with McGinn as recently as last weekend. Offered £23,000 a week by Villa after travelling south for talks on Tuesday, however, he is now agonising over a choice between his boyhood idols and the English Championship.

Asked if fans were justified in feeling Celtic might have met Hibs' asking price sooner, Rodgers replied: '150 per cent. If you open your door to players and they have an opportunity to go through that door and have a look and see there are other good clubs with facilities that are equal - and probably better - than what is here, then you risk the chance of them not coming back though the door. That is the gamble you take if you wait.'

Rodgers denied any personal frustration over the situation, insisting: 'I am fine. Whatever I feel will always be private. I will never speak openly on that.'

Admitting he still hopes to sign some players after the English transfer deadline closes at 5pm on Thursday, he added: 'I would hope so.'

Defender Denayer is the target of a year-long loan offer after the Belgian's agent held talks with Manchester City over his future on Tuesday, although the player is understood to be lukewarm on a return to the SPFL.

Keen on a Parkhead return is Izaguirre, a year since he left the club for an ill-fated move to Saudi Arabia.

With another Manchester City loan deal for 19-year-old Australian cap Daniel Arzani imminent, Rodgers emphasised the need for proven quality, adding: 'Talents are fine. All my career I have done that, worked with talents improving 19-year-olds, 20-year-olds, 17-year-olds, 18-year-olds, I have put them in.

'But you also need proven talent. You have to keep improving and developing and that is something we need to do.'

I was thinking last week this was BR mind games and making press think we aren't signing anyone when we were...now it seems it's a genuine problem and it's * like this why managers pack their bags and go. He's pretty much said the money's there and the board aren't backing his ambitions. Celtic really treading a dangerous ground here.

If BR leaves because the boards penny pinching, there will be a massive backlash.

The usual mugs will sit and make excuses for the board but the vast majority will not accept it.

He should go public, if the board don't react. Screw keeping it in.

I honestly thought we'd have a hard time keeping him here after winning the double treble, I mean where does he take us from here, other than continuing to steamroll everyone domestically, and europe becoming more of a closed shop every year.

I can see both sides when it comes to spending money for europe, the reality is we could spend every penny we have in the bank, get a horrible draw with the bigger teams who find our entire bank account down the back of the sofa, and still get hammered, it would feel like a waste to some. On the other hand we could go into the groups with the current squad, get a favourable draw and comfortably manage third or push second if we're lucky, rolling in it without spending a penny.

Obviously that's extremes either way and there's a balance to be struck, but with the big leagues pulling further away, what are our/rodgers 'ambitions' for the club in europe and what can we realistically achieve these days.

Yup, since season 2010/11 according to wikipedia( I know it's not going to be exactly accurate) we have a net gain of £27.65m in transfers and that's not including add ons like vvd sell on clause. Also, obviously not including 3 seasons worth of champions league money.

I know it doesn't really work like that since you have to take in player wages, bonus etc. But we must be sitting on an obscene amount of money.

The club needs to back Brendan. If he wanted McGinn and Roberts and whomever he had a reason. His soul purpose is developing good players and bringing them on to profit the club. Why can't they let him continue to do it his way as so far he has had nothing but success and raked in a fortune. We are on the brink of something truly great here why can't they see that. I was pleased with the double treble but in the back of my mind it was just a stepping stone to the ultimate treble treble .......now that I could get really excited about! 10 in a row is in doubt if Brendan goes and it would be a crying shame if he doesn't get to do it. The club owe him and us that. All just when we thought that they were starting to really get it eh?

I accidentally clicked on the thread title and not the latest page. See the absolute joy that everybody has in that first page? That is what the board are willing to risk to make themselves bonuses and make their CVs look good. It is beyond crazy that the best we can come up with for defence is 2 players who we have let go previously (Ok, Denayer wasn't let go, but you get the gist).

AEK are probably the best team we have faced since being knocked out of the Europa League by Zenit. The defence is not good. Not good in any way shape or form. We can all see it. Too many people comfy in their positions at Parkhead.

I get why BR might be * off - but I also get that it's not ALL about him.

He thought the player was worth paying over the odds for - the Board didn't. Uncle Desmond will give him a nice cuddle and a bit of 'there there' and we will move on... as we always do.

    Hail Hail.
