I don’t like that, due to the fact that Van Dijk said he was only with us due to Champions League, with our run to the Last 16 the year before being a big part of his reasoning to be there.

If Brendan reasons that he doesn’t want guys like that I’d be worried.

 

The fact that its August and we still haven't strengthened the defence, baffles me..

I think Celtic simply can't compete financially. I'd imagine there are a lot of players at the club, as well as Rodgers, on near the top wages that the club can offer. I'm sure someone can say if the wage bill has increased under Rodgers?
I'd be amazed if the club hasn't been trying to strengthen at CB but the budget must be seriously restrictive when attempting to secure a player of a higher standard.

 

Fair point mate. Id like to imagine the sell would be the fact we achieved CL football the last two seasons and the exposure we got as a result.

Even with that being said, there are quality players that will be playing europa league and even some not playing european football at all.

 

Yep that pretty much confirms that this waiting until we qualify to sign players negative is a lot of *.

It seems like we're either stockpiling cash until Sevco get better or we're not making as much as we think.

 

We are making plenty, but we don’t have 10s of millions just sitting about.

 

We have about 40 million sitting in the bank though. I’m sure so being 10 million of that would be fine to massively improve our defence.

 

Hi, new member lads. I'm baffled as to why we haven't strengthened this summer. The rumours are that UEFA have doubled the money this year to £40m for qualification as to the previous £20m. Surely this should be the summer to invest in some real quality. Speculate to accumulate. We need to keep going forward as a club, not standing still.

 

Can someone come up with a more unoriginal saying on this forum, it seems to pop up in every thread.

 

Then we are poor negotiators. We need to convince a player or two that THEY are the ones to lead us to Champions League and a memorable European season.

 

Strange watching pre-season and now the competitive games without having any new players to run the rule over. Morgan been it and he signed last season and is out for a few weeks.

Worst thing for me is that we were flat as * for a lot of last season and now go into this one without the options of Roberts, Armstrong and, briefly, Musonda. Think we will struggle to switch things up at points, a top winger was as important as a CB for me, been largely overlooked.

 

£40 million is a considerable upgrade than what was previously on offer and like it or not we will have to spend to have any chance of being there on a regular basis, that for us would be the closest thing to EPL money. Without strong competition in the SPL the board have got away wuthout substantial re-investment in the squad because we are happy as long as we win the league. Yet money can be found for a hotel, standing section etc but none for something that has a strong chance of guaranteeing £40M a season. We need quality players or need to create our own. For that it's not just a Celtic issue but one the SFA must address. It's ridiculous that countries like Iceland put us to shame in how they approach youth coaching etc.

 

Quite clearly we have to chase that 40m every season because without champions league money, we as a club will lose money every season without it because of our wage budget. What is your input into this topic instead of trying argue?? I personally don't think we will qualify this season, our bench was pathetic last night for that level. Nobody apart from rogic could have came on and changed the game for us so if we don't qualify our top players will be sold to cover the loss of champions league money. Tierney or dembele or ntcham.. one of them will be sold. We are a selling club to epl unless we bank this champions league fund every season. Simple

 

Previous seasons it’s £27m this year £40m but that extra £13m (if we get there) would be put into the reserve pot

 

Rodgers has said he could have signed 10 players by now but he waits on quality and you have to take him at his word rather than the board bot paying out is it a case he doesn’t think there is someone who can enhance our squad?

 

Or the if we spend money we will end up like them.... that's another one.

Well there is now Pete at the last count on 31sr December there was £30m cash pile at the bank!

 

My guess is that the club’s stockpiling money for when the Champions League inevitably becomes a closed shop.
