Gutted he is suspended for the Ingerlund QF. Him slotting it in the net against them would give me great joy and also lining up in a WC QF would shut up the idiots saying the SPL is a sham.

When England play Sweden on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup, the Samara Arena will be filled with red and white St George’s crosses and the Scandinavians’ famous yellow and blue flag, writes Gary Meenaghan. Celtic’s Swedish defender Mikael Lustig, however, is hoping to also spot some saltires.

Lustig, 31, was a rock in Sweden’s defence as they defeated Switzerland 1-0 on Tuesday and is hoping for a show of support from his adopted home.

“It’s unreal,” he said. “Last eight in the world is obviously a massive thing for us. I’ve been receiving a lot of support from Scotland and hopefully, I will see a lot of Scottish people in Samara.”

Having collected a yellow card against the Swiss, Lustig will be suspended for the quarter-final with England.

“It’s mixed feelings to miss the next one,” he said. “But hopefully the guys are going to let me play in the semi-final.”

Lustig is a popular character at Parkhead and even before leaving the St Petersburg Arena, the congratulatory messages had started to flood in from team-mates.

“I’m lucky to have very strong support from Scotland. A few of the boys have been in contact already. We have a couple of WhatsApp groups and the manager as well, so I’m absolutely feeling it,” said Lustig, who has been following Celtic’s pre-season results from afar. “I haven’t seen the games, but of course I know the scores. Celtic are still my family and I’m following them from here. I’ve always been happy there. It’s my family.”

Never understand some who want him replaced. Think he is a good player and reads the game well. So * he isn't the fastest or best at attacking, we have Forrest for that.
Yet some in the same breath will also moan our setup isn't doing us favours for defending...while wanting a more attacking right back.

Anyway, well done Mikael. Hope he keeps his place for the semi final.

Can also tell "we have a couple of WhatsApp groups" one is the sensible, the gaffer is watching, chat. The other is him and the lads acting stupid.

I think he can continue to be valuable to us if we bring in someone with whom he can rotate. I think he was probably at his best when he was fighting it out with Adam Matthews for a place in the starting XI.

That would be a more convincing argument if he was defensively dependable last season; even the most ardent Lustig fan couldn't argue that with conviction.

From his scuffed clearance at Firhill that let he player in, to then concede a penalty by pulling him back.

To his scuffed pass/brain fart that gave the ball to GMS who he then hauled down and got sent off.

Lustig is a brilliant guy and will always be part of the Celtic family but if we want to progress as a team we need to target weak areas in the team and right back is undoubtedly one of those.

Bad form doesn’t make a bad player for me.

Not wanting to just argue for the sake of it, but a lot could be said about the whole team last season based on previous performances. But for some, it wasn't just last season they started to want him moved on. This started 2 years ago while still in his 20's.
He has also been defensively sound and organised for Sweden this tournament, which is a more recent reflection on his current ability.

Would agree with @Vertie that perhaps another in with him for rotation, perhaps someone at the age of 22-23 to rotate and take over in a couple years.
Admittedly Gamboa and Ralston (I hate to say this) aren't up to scratch. So he needs competition, but for me we shouldn't be getting rid of Lustig, or trying to phase him out too suddenly.

A very good player who has lost his legs..

    It happens..

Sweden have a back 4 who very rarely go forward and it suits him better now that he's regressed. Still seen him caught out quite a few time's though..

I'd be amazed if we started the season with him still as our first choice right back..

Hate to say it, but I agree with you.

He's been ripped to shreds recently by defenders with pace (regardless of lack of skill), but he's still managed to "get away with it" every now and again.

He's still got enormous qualities, but he's dwindling as a footballer.

He is dwindling but he’s still a bery solid defender, he was in bad form last season, miscontrolling the ball and giving it away, bad decisions... That was form, not him breaking down.

BR has already had a look at a RB, it’s a position we will defo strengthen..

He's getting older, and slower - hence my point about him dwindling.

That being said, like I already pointed to he still does have vast amounts of experience and is certainly STILL a valuable member of the squad.

He needs to be pushed though in terms of competition for the RB spot.

That's why I'm quite content about the situation as it looks like BR is already aware that we need to strengthen there.
