Is there more Celtic or Rangers fans in Glasgow?

Can't agree with saying they don't get good backing, 50k or close to it every second week to watch Haliday and co play the likes of Hamilton and Ross begrudgingly has to be accepted as fitting into that category no matter how much we despise them or unobjective about them we want to be.

I'm with you on Gerrard however, it's baffling considering their financial plight but that's for another thread.

I've lived in several countries and in every one Celtic are bigger by far with massive presence compared with theirs, it's unquestionable that as soon as you get out of the UK the huns have almost no appeal on any level...I'm also talking about when they were in the middle of their 9 and we were in a mess

 

I'm not so sure about that. I know plenty of English people who support Celtic, and very few with Rangers' leanings.

As for myself, I'm English; Church of England; my only experience of Ireland was sitting on Belfast Airport runway whilst my plane refuelled on the way to Canada;and whilst I support the idea of a united Ireland, I abhor the violence and tactics of the IRA. Yet I'm a Celtic fan, and have a hatred for both Deadco and the current Tribute Act.

In my experience, the average Englishman doesn't pay too much attention to religion (so the Catholic/Protestant thing goes over our heads), and doesn't understand English politics, let alone the complexities of Ireland. For example, I happened to mention at work, that my wife had crashed her car on Orangemen's Day, and 4 of the 6 people within earshot didn't know what Orangemen's Day was, and when i tried to explain, it turned out they'd never heard of Orange Lodges, Orange Marches, Battle of Boyne, William of Orange etc etc

Both of my little cousins have been to games with us, and the oldest one even talked my parents into buying her a Celtic jersey; they’re Celtic daft, even though their dad is nominally a Rangers fan.

My experience is that most English don't really care about us or them.. and are ignorant about the rivalry and have been brainwashed when it comes to the history of Ireland.

 

for me, most football fans down here only really know about the football rivalry between us and the huns, and that its traditionally catholic/protestant. I know a Chelsea/Rangers fan who gives it all the up the queen patter, and most of corby is full of huns, with a good amount of tims there too (its wee english scotland there). You only have to look how many CSCs are down here to see how many Englsish Celtic fans are here, and theres plenty of English with Scottish/Irish heritage who will side for us than the scum.

 

I always thought Glasgow was more Celtic and the rest of Scotland was more Rangers, but what do I know I don't live there. I have noticed in England more Celtic fans by a long way than Rangers fans these days. There is still some bigotry by older fans though in England been called a * by builders types in cars as they drove past a few times over the years but gave them the thumbs up and thanked them I took it as complement.

 

I'm not sure how much we English understand the bigotry behind comments like that. We just view it as a bit of banter, not having any idea of the historical context behind the word.

 

You come across alot of ex military who prefer huns, but most in England dont care about Scottish football. Some Celtic fans around but i think all of my peers had thier own reasons to support the obvious man u chelsea etc.
Theres no respect for scottish football in england though. I agree with nasser, older generations still have reasons to dislike us and you do see it.

You can find innumerable articles online detailing the horrifically low crowds they were getting in the lower divisions. They were not, under any circumstances, filling the Bigotdome out each week. In fact crowds were often as low as 12,000.

 

Ffs tbh iv read that so much and heard it along with no bothering to tune into any of there games i just thought it was true. 12000 what a joke of a club.

 

They only sold 26,515 season tickets in the 2014/15 season their first in the Championhip with Hearts and Hibs in it.



With their average League attendance under 35,000 even though they'd have near sold out the 4 Hibs and Hearts game, so their averge tickets sold for their run of the mill League games would have been under 30,000 and then how many of them even turned up to the games.

I always hear that we’re more widely supported globally but they’re more widely supported in Scotland and the rest of the UK. The latter doesn’t really hold true, from what I’ve seen at least.

I think people underestimate how much the English dislike them, and how little support they get from those south of the border. Scottish football collectively is blatantly looked at with disdain, but sevco in particular are more often than not seen as a particularly scummy team, and rightfully so. That’s been my experience in the larger cities at least, but maybe it’s no surprise that more cosmopolitan areas tend to prefer a club with a left wing identity.

In Scotland...it’s difficult to say. Amongst fans of neither club they’re definitely disliked more than us, mainly due to the whole liquidation scandal. I thinks it’s pretty close overall. The balance of power at any time definitley influences things - you could be forgiven for thinking Glasgow was a one-club city on cup final day this year with the number of Tims around the city centre.

 

It's mental how much more money Celtic fans put into our club than theirs. 2016/17 their first in the Premier our Matchday income was over £16million more than theirs and we made a profit of £7.22million on Merchandising - they don't run their own Merchandising but they only got £375k.

So Celtic fans directly put nearly £23million into our club than theirs that season, it was probably the same again this season.

Also with all that additional support we have and kits we sell comes the extra money, Celtic get around £10million a season from New Balance, Dafabet and Magners, the huns will be lucky if they are getting £3million a season from Hummel and whatever sponsor they have and Hummel are naming their training ground in that as well.

We have always had better Kit deals than them as well like they used to only get £2million from Nike when we were getting £3million from Umbro, then they went down to £1.5million with Diadora and we went on from Umbro to Nike for £5million. Their most recent deal with Puma it seems they got £5million up front for 4 years(£1.25million a season) while Celtic moved on from £6million from Nike to £6.5million a season with New Balance.
