Former Celtic captain Tom Boyd has told Parkhead midfielder Stuart Armstrong he needs to decide what he wants from football as the player’s exit from the club appears likely.

Armstrong signed a two-year deal with Celtic last August after a protracted summer of speculation about his future. The Scotland internationalist had a difficult campaign with injuries and his impact wasn’t what it was in the latter half of Brendan Rodgers’ invincibles season.

Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion have been keeping tabs on the midfielder’s situation and it is believed that Celtic are relaxed about any offers that may come in for the 26-year-old.

Boyd, though, has told Armstrong he needs to make his mind up about what he wants to take from his career.

“I think he’s a happy man at Celtic. He’ll win things at Celtic,” said Boyd, speaking at a Tartan Army charity tournament at Goals football centre.

“What do you want to be as a player? “Do you want to be a winner? Or do you want to just earn good money?

“I really hope Stuart can stay at Celtic. We don’t want our best players leaving.

“I know in the grand scheme of things there’s a big gap between the Scottish Premiership and the English Premier League. Stuart clearly has a decision to make.

“He is a massive part of the Celtic team and generally has a big impact.

“Celtic are well covered in the midfield areas. If something was to happen, that Stuart decides to leave, then we’ve certainly got a lot of other options. But, we don’t want a player like that to leave and what he brings to the club. He’s got great drive and ability and we’d rather see him here.

“At the moment, where it lies, if somebody was to come in and make a good offer then there needs to be serious consideration.

“At this moment in time he’s a Celtic player and hopefully he will stay a Celtic player.

“Stuart brings a different aspect to the central midfield area.

“We’ve got good players in there; [Callum] McGregor, [Tom] Rogic, similarly attack minded boys.

    “Yes, we’ve got good cover.

“But I don’t want to see Stuart go. Hopefully we can get him to stay — a five year contract would be nice.”

Still indifferent about him. His form and some of his play/goals were fantastic during the invincible a season, but was it just a purple patch in a high performing squad?

Maybe after a full pre-season fully fit he will get back to that level, but do we risk playing him when he could just leave for free on a pre contract by January? Personally prefer Rogic in the 10, and Oli next to Broon, so I'm not sure he'd be missed all that much, especially if he actively wants to leave. We need players committed to the long term vision of 10 and beyond.

Resigned to losing him well before he put pen to paper on this short term deal..

He's an intelligent man and will try and make as much out the game as possible...he will maybe go to the EPL be a success and then try and hit Monaco, China or the US..

I doubt he will be a great success in the EPL but I find it totally unbelievable that Monaco would buy him

Who knows depends how he does, the point I'm making is he'll try and make as much out of the game as he can, winning honours with us has ticked a box & now he'll move.. if he ends up in a Tax Haven I wouldn't be surprised..

If he leaves, I predict he'll go to a relegation fighting EPL team and after them, end up in the championship. I just don't think he has the technical ability to play much higher than that.

Can see him at Burnley. He’s got the energy, work-rate, and combo of defensive/attacking attributes that Sean Dyche loves in his midfielders.

I think your looking into the whole "Intelligent with a law degree" thing far too much. Armstrong wanting to go to England has nothing to do with his perceived level of intelligence.

He's not chasing China, US, Middle East, tax havens - He's chasing the English Premier League.

Nothing coming from the club sugests still in negotiation ,otherwise they would announce he is for sale to draw out all interested parties ,was given games to gain fitness an tail end of season ,why bother if his wish is to leave they would leave him on the bench like roberts, not doneand dusted yet ,would wait till club make some noises then we can all know the situation .

Announcing him for sale at this point would make us seem desperate and do nothing to maximize our fee. Giving him game time at the end of the season may have been a way of putting him in the shop window and gaining fitness will also help the fee. I have seen nothing from the club to suggest he is not pondering over a new contract as was the case with Tom Rogic

Think he’ll do just fine in the premiership, geared towards hard workees, fit players, with some ability. That’s pretty much Armstrong. He’ll work hard, grab the odd goal, set up the odd goal.

Lower end of the EPL they’ll love him.

I'd love to be wrong, as long as we get a good price for him.

Gave him game time to put him in the shop window last season..

The amount of time he took to sign a contract and then the subsequent length tells us he wants out..

He won't be here end of the window..

If Steve Davis can cut it in the EPL, Armstrong should be more than capable.

Different players, I would say Davis does the simple side of the game much better.

I think he has potential to do fine in the EPL, think he will suit playing for a counter attacking lower placed side who don't care much for building from the back.

Armstrong would do well in the bottom half of epl teams ,I would prefer him to stay as he's a useful option but hardly integral to our plans so i wouldn't be making him a highest earner. Seems he wants to go anyway why sign a 1 year deal? makes no sense. and Celtic won't let his contract run into 6months then nothing.

If he goes we will sign another midfielder certainty anyway 1 in 1 out.
