celtic used to pull in some of the best attendances in world football along with der hun,50s,60s attendances sometimes broke the 100 thousand mark.i would argue there is a market there.

I'm sure it was Celtic Aberdeen at Hampden that was the biggest ever in Scotland for sure and maybe the UK.

Over 138,000 :56: Can't imagine how mental that atmosphere must've been.

The highest ever attendance for a UEFA competition match was in the 1969–70 European Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, Scotland's national stadium. A record 136,505 people attended the match between Celtic and Leeds United. ... Rangers'
record attendance of 118,567 at Ibrox is a British record for a league match.

from google.a think if we want more fans back cheaper ticket prices would be a good start.

My *, that must've been some party after the Leeds game. There must've been 50 pubs in Mount Florida.

Oh I shouldn't laugh but that is a funny image and such cruel luck :56: I know we obviously beat them but did we win that game? I think we drew down there and won up here? I'm just thinking if we won then it wouldn't be so bad for him cause he would've been in some mood.

We won 2-1.leeds were favourites.we won one nil down there.

Leeds United, indeed no other side in Europe, had ever faced such a one-sided support as this one. With only 4,500 fans travelling up from Yorkshire, the support for Celtic was overwhelming. The attendance was a record for a European Cup match. It still stands to this day and is unlikely ever to be beaten."

    quite a good article.http://www.mightyleeds.co.uk/matches/19700415.htm

Cheers, wow that just sounds breathtaking. Just imagining all the fans approaching from all angles stopping the traffic and drinking a cargo singing songs. What a day out that would've been. Please tell me we won.

The off sales all over Glasgow must've loved Hampden in those days. Would freak out the Asda staff now.

4,500 :56: I doubt we heard them singing that day. Check their team too, full of famous names down south. Their best players were Scottish I think, that's how much talent we produced in the 60s, insane. It's quite funny they were favourites considering how good the Lions were but I think that Leeds team were successful in their own league.

Must've been a good boost for us having that many fans cheering us on, intense.

But what a walk back into town for those poor fans with over 130,000 Tims partying :36:

Oh * :56::55: That would've been like a pilgrimage to Loch Derg walking back into town.

Aberdeen were that good? Seems only a couple year ago we pumped them 9 0, revenge :56:

He's winding you up Celtic won it, seemingly 20,000 also turned away from the turnstiles and locked out.

The mighty Leeds sent a shitload of tickets back, kills me when the English give it the pub talk, none of them could lace Celtics boots fan wise or the cream buns for that matter, old parkhead not one english team could fill the rangers end, The huns were the only team that could fill it.

The great train wreckers who terrorised down here..

I bet they didn't even take 4 and a half. No chance..

I remember reading about Forest when they put us out at Celtic Park in their glory day's and they brought about 500 or something I'm sure..

Yip back in the day kids didn't pay loads of turnstile jumping cashiers taking bungs, Celtic used to cook the attendance figures years ago i've seen the place packed out and in the paper the attendance was like 40 odd thousand. it held 67,000 in the 80's, when Celtic played notts forrest they brought a handfull of fans.

That article is a fantastic read, thanks a lot!

Don Revie "I would give a years wages to beat Celtic."

Jock Stein "Revie is * himself." :56:

Amazing commentary regarding Jinky, my * he must've been our greatest ever. I love how he was turning a Leeds player inside out and legendary hard man Norman Hunter (basically a hacking * I've read) shouts over to said team mate, "chop that little * down." and team mate replies, "you * come over and have a go." So the big hard man accepts the challenge but Jinky totally rag dolls him turning him inside out and he couldn't lay a boot on him and this is a guy not trying to get the ball of Jinky, he's trying to get Jinky! :dancing::notworthy How I wish I was born earlier to see this guy play. Bremner said it's the greatest exhibition of football he'd ever seen. Revie said before the game to his players, Jimmy Johnstone, that's the guy we have to stop and I know how. If you're on your own he'll take you on and you've 'ad it but if a team mate is behind you he will pass it.

But it didn't work! Jinky still ripped them apart haha * bless you Jinky :ynwacelti'll

What is amazing is it sounds a bit like the Inter game. Leeds scored first and Celtic just took control of the game when most teams get a bit nervous when your away goal is cancelled out so early.

There's loads more cool commentary and comments from players. It's brilliant.

Oh man I totally envy you after reading that match report. It does mention there were far more supporters in there than tickets sold. But you got to see Jinky playing destroying a highly regarded Leeds team with Hunter in it. That's fantastic :60: The atmosphere must've been nuts. Bremner said it went deadly quite when he scored and the silence of so many people freaked him out and it felt like an hour but a couple minutes later the chorus rang out full blast "Celtic, Celtic!" That also freaked him out :giggle1:

Ahem....o_O :redcard: Putting me on a downer after me imagining us partying down Aikenhead road :RedFinger

Cheers Devlin :50: Didn't know JC was a wind up merchant :grntongue Coincidentally, before the Leeds game Aberdeen did beat us in the Cup final at Hampden 3 1, * :47: That's your fault Anton :nonono:

Aye I think in England pundits were very confident before the first leg that Super Leeds would destroy us but apparently we destroyed them even though it was only 1 0 we had complete domination in their own stadium. No wonder their fans sent half the tickets back, if we could do that to them on their own patch what would we do in Glasgow with 140,000 Tims cheering us on? They weren't wrong.

Did the English no * it coming up here cause back in the day Scotland England games were full of a lot of let's say dislike of one and other and losing those games was not allowed, it was your worst nightmare. But Scotland could actually pump England back in those days. It was fierce competition both on and off the field.

Mind you I think that was only for Internationals because there was no trouble when 4,500 came up for the Celtic game.

Disappointing if they couldn't fill a stand in the old Parkhead, I mean our fans always want more tickets when we go down there. Jeez oh it was 20 odd year ago but feels like yesterday when we used to go down there and pump them every time. That was so much fun. Nakamura!

My * that could lead to heated debate. If I got one finger on Jinky's boot I would be claiming it! What a treasure that would've been for some lucky fans to take home.

Aye getting a lift into games when in primary was excellent. A great day out with your mates for free. The old Celtic board were well dodgy :56: When it was terracing you fitted in like sardines. When the Jungle celebrated a goal you got lifted up and down it was that packed.

I love it when our testimonials are sold out, it's a real show of love and appreciation for the player. And back when there was no tv money footballers weren't millionaires so testimonials were to give them some kind of retirement money. I'm sure I read that. These days the multi millionaires often donate receipts to charity and I'm pretty sure Broony would have done that. Didn't he lose a young family member to illness?
