I'd concede that as Ntcham did but even then he has at times been overlooked when fit.

As you say we've signed multiple players in positions that we still look vulnerable.

The statement he has made on Compper essentially being a back-up until other players aren't playing well completely contradicts his statement during the January transfer window too:

"For us, it's all about trying to get the quality and not necessarily about numbers. It's about trying to get in the players who can make a difference for us."

Compper isn't the only one in this situation. We have Gamboa, Kouassi, De Vries and Hayes all signed for reasonable transfer fees and evidently not deemed better than what we already had.

In Scottish Football our outlay far outstrips the competition therefore we can get away with it but in European Football where we are regularly up against teams whose spending is many multiples of ours, we need to be getting the maximum value from every signing to have any chance of beating them. Right now, I don't think we're getting that.

You believe Boyata "seized" his chance?

    Absolute waffle man.

He clearly did, in Brendan's eyes at least.

I wonder if BR feels some sort of duty to play Boyata with it being WC year

Think he did last season, showed real determination to force his way back into the side, Simunovic could learn something from in that respect...

He can't mask his limitations as footballer tho it's clear he isn't good enough.. BR is showing too much loyalty to him imho, he obviously rates his work ethic but that can only take you so far..

A new contract would be a worry.

    Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen, Boyata.

Which is the odd one out? :56:

If my memory serves me correctly, I think he played near enough all of Leipzig’s games in their debut season last season when they finished 2nd?

Boyata certainly hasn’t nailed down a spot and neither has Hendry. Ajer, for me, should always start and has done lately. I’ve been been surprised Compper hasn’t been given more game time but this could change when the league’s sealed. As many have said, could be another unsuccessful Rodgers’ buy.

    Do you?

Boyata has not "seized" any chance, by any stretch of the imagination. I don't care if Rodgers is starting him, he doesn't merit it.

As JC said, he seized his chance last season. Since coming back from injury he isn't starting because of form. 'Best of a bad bunch' is closer to the truth than Boyata seizing any chance.

Ajer seized his chance, Forrest his, Griff last season, Bain etc. Boyata has been mince..

Boyata has a major point to prove, especially after his invidual * ups at Ibrox in the last game.

Brendan has shown in the past he is willing to stick by people with the right commitment and desire, for all we know Boyata might be putting in exceptional performances and desire in training the last few weeks.

Rodgers has given us enough to show that we should trust him, if he starts with Boyata on Sunday, I'll trust his judgement, even if my heart will be set for a cardiac arrest at the thought of seeing him waalk out on to the pitch for the start of the game....

Fully agree, as far as I'm aware, Boyata is the only viable option for the cup game. That doesn't mean he deserves it, no matter how others want to justify and dress it up.

He is in there because we have poor options - A horrible version of Jozo, a rarely seen Compper and a kid in Hendry.

The fact Compper cant get in is a shambles, for whatever the reason it is, be it a dung signing or just not getting a chance.

I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the team at all just now. The thing is, if we’re judging Rodgers words of others have seized there chance, he’s clearly talking about Hendry, Ajer and Boyata.

I don’t think Boyata should be there but it’s Brendan’s opinion that matters.

If Compper can't get ahead of Boyata in the side then why the * was he signed?

Wasn't happy about the signing in the first place and by the looks of it he is going to be a waste of a transfer fee and * wages.

It's not like he has time on his hands....

"Seized his chance" is interesting- because Hendry and Ajer are new and young, I think people look at their performances as seizing a chance, and look for the positive. Boyata doesn't have a great reputation at times, so when he gives a performance just as good as either Hendry or Ajer, he doesn't get the same praise. It was the same way a lot of people were incredibly reluctant to praise Bitton when he came in and did well.

Indeed he must be wondering why did I sign for this team when useless players get game time before me !

The difference is that Boyata has, at times, been all over the shop since returning from injury, and the crux of the argument, is that Compper still can’t get his chance (for whatever reason).

The fact that his competition is two kids, and two (fairly) experienced guys in some of the worst form of their careers, is what really has me questioning what is really going on.

Rodgers essentially saying that Compper doesn’t deserve to be playing over these out of form players is just bizarre. I would totally get it if we were in the midst of an invincible season, with the defence swatting off any troubles - but we’re not.

100% it looks more to me that Compper was a panic buy and Rodgers clearly does not think he is good enough.
