It's so odd the resentment that some Irish hold for the diaspora, bearing in mind the main cause for it.

I was born in Newry but have lived in Scotland since an early age and speak with a Scottish accent. The amount of times I've been sneered at for saying I'm Irish both here and when back home is incredible. Can't think of any other country in the world that would do the same.

 

You’re right, it’s very odd. Even worse the ones that refer to nordies as ‘Northern Irish’ and deny their Irishness, like this eejit:

My Irish ancestry goes back to my great grandparents on my Dad's side. Not sure about my Mum's. I've always thought of myself as Scottish first and foremost but have always recognised I have Irish heritage. Like you, I've always had disparaging comments if I ever mention my Irish heritage (in Scotland).

 

Scotland's anti-Irish sentiment from the PUL community has became so common-place now it's to be expected (not accepted) but increasingly I find there are snide comments from Scottish people (normally with Irish heritage a few generations back) and from Irish when back home.

It's baffling.

 

Definitely strange set of affairs to be Irish-Scottish. You get called a tattie munching, bead rattling * all your days by Scots but you mention that you're Irish to an Irishman and you're a plastic paddy. An Irishman amongst Scotsmen and a Scotsman amongst Irishmen.

 

Some of the league of Ireland fans will just be a wee bit bitter that people support Celtic instead of their local team.

The Irish fans that will go to this will be of the sound variety, will only want to get involved in the craic and songs, leave the sneering lot at home.

On the whole diaspora thing a lot of people in ROI just dont understand, they never had to fight for their "Irishness" it just came natural, people from the North of the country would be alot more understanding of people who are proud to say they come from Irish stock.
