See this whole thing about the context of the game, this is a Brendan Rodgers team with a group of players a year down the line, do you not think that by this time these players should be able to handle a game like tonight, because if we are supposed to be learning and improving as Brendan has said, then i think tonights performance would suggest this isn't the case.

Of course the main objective was to reach the Europa and we've managed that, but nevertheless we really should've been looking to gain a home win tonight which would've given us a degree of confidence going into next weeks draw.

For me it wasn't just the fact that we lost the game, it was the manner of the defeat.

A few people are fooled by our domestic form. I wont judge us against the likes of psg but if thats how we play against anderlecht at home. Then its not great at all

There’s no reason why we can’t have a diluted version of a Porto or Ajax model.

Sell big, invest and keep going. We’re in the infancy of the Rodgers era here, the seeds have yet to be sewn at every level.

Porto and Ajax play in more attractive leagues. Hope you’re right but I don’t see it.

Don’t really disagree mate.. I’m not defending the performance, just saying I can understand it to a degree.

Put it this way though, if we needed to win tonight I would be far more worried.

They play in leagues which feed their best players to bigger ones, same as Scotland.

They also don’t have the guarantee of winning trophies and medals early in a footballers career as Rodgers’ Celtic does hence the reason we have the likes of Moussa and Ntcham here.

6 games under Rogers in CLG at home and we have 1 draw and 5 losses with 4 goals for and 15 against. this is really depressing. I thought we'd do ok the EL after xmas but after toight i'm not so sure anymore if we cant beat a poor anderlecht team at home. need serious investment in the team if we are to get anywhere in europe.

Yep, that's what I thought, 1st time I've heard him sounding a bit * with the team.

Certainly an eye opener for some of the players when he has said about them not being upto that level at this time.

Could it be a case of........... how do you follow up an unbeaten treble season ?

Certainly levels have dropped for many players, i really think it's imperative that Brendan is backed by the Board in January.

Its worth noting that from this year to last there has been no progression. We have far fewer points domestically (16/17 = 43pts, 17/18 = 37pts), with fewer goals scored (44 to now 38) and in the UCL we have conceded more goals than last year (16 to now 18) whilst we picked up the same number of points this was at the expense of losing far more games (3 losses to this years 5).

Taking our UCL groups in isolation our performances were also much better last year. Aside from our win in Brussels and close miss against Bayern I would say our performances against Man City eclipsed these and Monchengladbach were a far superior side to Anderlecht yet we should have beaten them away from home.

Taking into account the current notable dip in performances from much of last years standout players and the drop in overall performance the trend seems to be on a downward trajectory rather than this year on year progression Rodgers seeks. Some wise transfer activity in January is required in order to kick us on again I feel. Otherwise Rodgers year 1 may be the pinnacle of his success rather than the heralding of the great things we all hoped and expected for.

Wish he would stop all these short corners as well they rarely amount to anything just get someone with decent delivery to whip it in.

    Jesus * christ.

WE'RE IN THE LAST 32 ON MERIT. That is progress from last year. The humpings to PSG were horrific but they are doing it to everyone this season.

The home form is shocking and needs rectified, the players look terrified of the ball, but lets not make this something it isn't.

Spend some money in January to shore up key areas and we go again February.

You're dissecting the mans career in one post after us essentially beating Anderlecht 3-1 over 2 ties to progress to the last 32. :giggle1:

Never said we weren't there on merit THIS YEAR. Merely noting that looking at our performances statistically and objectively against last years then we haven't progressed.

For posterity Bayern pumped PSG tonight and they also lost against lowly Strasbourg at the weekend. So obviously not 'doing it to everyone', as good as they are!

I'm really not sure what the reason is. Could be second season syndrome, it could be opposing teams being more familiar with Rodgers tactics and how we play(so they come up with better game plans to frustrate us), it could be that some players played better last season than they actually are(eg. Stuart Armstrong). Who knows.

One of the obvious differences between this season and last that I can pinpoint is Scott Sinclair. He was such a key player for us last season and this season he just hasn't been the same guy. Is it a dip in form? Did he play better last season than would be normal for him? Are teams defending him differently this season? Again, I'm not sure. But the decline in his effectiveness has impacted on us as a team. We need him back at the level he was at last season. Hopefully it will come.
