KIERAN Tierney was understandably thrilled after putting pen to paper on a new six-year deal with Celtic. This is the team he has always supported and Paradise is his home. So the opportunity to commit his long-term future to the club and know that he is a Celt until at least the summer of 2023 was something he was delighted to take.

Everything was conducted quickly and without fuss from either party, and the 20-year-old was never anything other than completely focused on his duties as a Celtic player. Now, with his future settled, he will continue to have that focus, and he’s now looking forward to taking on Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Tierney said: “I give a lot of thanks to the manager for believing in me. I’ve also got the right people around me to keep me grounded and it’s a big credit to them. My family will be delighted and it’s a big reward for them for believing in me and putting the work in all these years.”

Since making his debut in a goal-less draw with St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on May 15, 2015, Tierney has gone on to become a first-team regular, and he is just four appearances short of a century with the Hoops.

Alongside the likes of Paul McStay and Roy Aitken, he will be one of the youngest ever Celts to reach 100 games for the club, and it’s something he’s understandably proud of.

“It’s crazy the amount of appearances I’ve had already, and that’s with three operations as well, so it could have been a lot more,” he said, “but just to play that many games already for Celtic at this age is unbelievable and hopefully I can keep doing that.

“Every football player will tell you that they just take it one game at a time and that’s because it’s true. You’re not looking ahead beyond the next game and the next training day, so it’s just one game and one day at a time for me.”

A firm favourite with his fellow fans, Tierney’s delighted that he already has two songs to his name – “It’s two more than I ever thought I’d get, to be fair, and they’re catchy numbers as well,” – while he also knows that he and his fellow Youth Academy graduates such as James Forrest and Callum McGregor are role models for the young players coming through the ranks at the club.

“When you’re younger, you always look up to the ones who’ve already done it and have stayed there,” he said.” It’s really hard to get your chance but even harder to stay in the team and get a run of games, so I’m sure the younger players are looking to do that too and hopefully they can.

“And for me, Scott Brown is the perfect role model and leader for me to look up to. Even when I was younger and playing with the 20s, he would come and watch and take the game or training.

"So for me to know him that year and then make the step-up to the first-team helped and he was really welcoming and took me under his wing. He’s so influential for the team and so important to everyone in the changing-room.”

Brilliant news. I'm confused though because apparently he is too good for us and was going to leave when Brendan got a new job and took him away from us, thus fulfilling both their potentials because you can't be ambitious at Celtic...

    Great news....even though he's very young ,
He's showing great commitment. ...so many players of his age and talent would be looking to head south.
Guys like this are few and far between.

In today's climate of crazy wages this is a steal. The boy will become at 20 million plus player easy.
The boy is staying for ten in a row that's guaranteed in time he may well become a member of everyone's greatest ever Celtic Xl.
