The * mind blowing facts about the mad neutron star collision.

Not just the distance and light years and all that jazz, but the density of these things. A teaspoonful of a neutron star can weigh thousands of tons!!!!!

    I mean, whit!!!!???

@obafgkmlt hit me with some more

If you took a sugar cube size of a neutron star and put it on a set of scales, the sugar cube needed on the other scale to even it out would be the equivalent weight of every single person on this planet combined

I had to be very quiet about that event - we actually knew about it a good month and a half ago :84:

My research group tried to observe it but we were clouded out, and I'm one of the time administrators on the telescope system PROMPT, which was the second observatory to identify this!

    Paper: http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/aa8edf/pdf
(The last 3 authors are from my university and I work with them a lot)

The reason this is so huge is that this is the only time we've been able to actually see a source of gravitational waves! The other 4 confirmed GW events were just us feeling the ripple, but this time we could actually see what happened when these stars collided and blew up. Astronomers got data in X-ray, optical, radio, all sorts of wavelengths, and the full observation report paper has 4500 authors on it!

The biggest talking point the press conference had was that these neutron star mergers could account for half the heavy metals like gold and platinum that exist in the universe (the other half being supernovae).

Here's the press conference from yesterday, for those interested:

David Sand in the second panel applied for a professorship job at my university last year, but decided to go to Arizona instead. The telescopes he talks about are ours :84:

I was telling my wife this morning that her gold jewellery was once part of a star billions of billions miles away :50:

Also the noise was a bit of an anticlimax, I expected a bigger boom!!

I feel the universe seems to be a big science experiment & explosions seems to create things, the big bang was an explosion, life here was probably created by a volcanoe exploding or an asteroid exploding into earth,we now no gold was created by an explosion.

think the james webb telescope has been put back untull 2019,really looking forward to that.

Huns in work isn't the gym n a right good mood cos we lost to Bayern in the champions league. Reminds me of when Celtic were utter pish and this was one of the few things to cheer about. Just shows how far ahead we are from them now, probably further in fact and we didn't cheat to do it
