He's young and a different type of player obviously.. but the amount of time he's in the right place at the right time is scary..
The two of them should provide the correct balance.

Anderlecht will be a competitive match and will give us all a better idea of where we're at...

I expect a 2-2 to happen, with many people here crying for a waste of points. Rodgers is just too focused on the attack.

2-2 would be an excellent result...

When BR got the job we knew his philosophy, we knew there would be matches where we would be cruelly exposed in Europe. The likes of Moyes might have made us tough to beat but a Moyes would never have been capable of delivering what we have just now...

BR could lead us to amazing heights in Europe and I wouldn't change his arrogance or his absolute belief in the way things should be done and the way the game should be played..

CL qualification twice in a row and a real chance of back to back domestic trebles for the first time in history. Aye its a nightmare isn't it!!

Away you go ya absolute *!

We could do more than just qualify for the CL, if Rodgers learned from Moyes or even Lennon.

We need to be pragmatic in some CL games, that's just reality. I think Rodgers realises this and actually set us up pretty defensively in the PSG game. One common theme in the PSG and Barca game was that we offered the opposition too much respect and didn't press well enough as a team - in fairness, they're two of the best sides in the world and PSG in particular were ridiculously good.

But yeah, there's nothing wrong with adopting a defensive approach when required, and I believe Rodgers realises that. There's ways of operating cautiously without just packing the defence though, and I think any defensive setup is best deployed with a legitimate counter attacking threat. It's difficult finding the balance against the best sides in the world, and for that reason we'll be on the receiving end of more 5-0 type results, but we'll also get some excellent results. We've been unlucky with the draw (feels like we always are) given that we'll have played Man City, Barcelona, Bayern and PSG in the space of 2 campaigns. Anderlecht is a proper test for us.

To be fair to you, you see a lot of stuff that others on here seem to miss, including me! I think it's because you've obviously got a far better understanding of the game than some of us mere mortals! :fear:

What you and i saw on Saturday are polar opposites!!

Look, you are trying to convince us that Brendan doesn't really know what he's doing defensively and that we need to play more defensive midfielders in Europe; I hope you understand that to even begin to change anyone's mind on this, you'll have to come up with a really tight and well-reasoned argument. Sweeping generalisations about how to set up a team against superior opposition and assertions not backed about about Brendan's skill as a coach are really not going to win anyone round to your point of view.

Genuinely, mate, the way you're talking, you'd think Lenny beat Barça by just throwing defensive players and tactics at it, when it was actually a combination of a great plan that, for example, targeted one of their few limitations (at that time they weren't particularly dangerous on crosses), meticulous attention to detail, players working their balls off and carrying out their instructions to the letter and a little bit of luck.

Either set your argument out carefully or let it go... or crack on and put up with being ridiculed.

Tbh I was quite angry with the way we set up against PSG but in the cold light of day playing Brown, Armstrong & Ntcham is probably the most containing midfield three he could have played.. and it was the quality of the opposition v a makeshift defence that didn't help matters..

Truth is we could have been full strength v PSG and still sustained the same score line..

Anderlecht is a much more even contest and it will be big test for the whole team, we need to defend and attack as a unit and is a pivotal night for the Boyata/Simunovic partnership..and in the faith BR has put in that partnership..

Brendan's defensive record in the EPL coupled with our European games thus far under his management should be a solid enough argument. Yes, Lennon planned well. But he also had the willingness to play negative football. He made tactical adjustments that were required, but the key thing was: willingness to frustrate the opposition.
In Scotland, Lennon employed offensive tactics that befit us, the best team in the country. We scored loads of goals. We do so now, as well. I just want that other part of that legendary team back- that fortress which could ruin the day of any big shot coming here.
