There is a lot of people on YouTube that have great videos if you're interested deep digger dan was my favourite to watch when I got into it.

I'd like to do it as a hobby but it's illegal in Ireland

Ireland still has thousands of un-excavated sites of historical significance, people would go out treasure hunting and ruin potential places of historical significance.

Always fancied it myself. Even if it's all tat you find, you still get the initial buzz of excitement, I would imagine.

Surley identifying and finding unknown historical sites is better than them remaining lost forever.

The sites are all mostly located, there is a specific minister in Ireland in charge of all of these sites among other things, I believe they sometimes excavate the sites officially and in a way that won't ruin the area.

An average joe with a metal detector is more likely to break anything found or ruin any chances of learning about the object or how it got there/how long it's been there etc. as well as ruining the surrounding area in an attempt to find something worth money.

One of my old managers done it for years and loves it. He says it's not just about rocking up somewhere and hoping to find something. One of his favourite parts was the detective work involed before you do go.
Looking up old historical information about areas close to you and the history of it. Says that is rely interesting plus it also ups your chances of uncovering something.
He told me a bit about the cavehill hills in Belfast which was interesting. Used to be used by ancient Celtic farmers. All the caves are man made which I never knew. As well as loads of other stuff.
Been looking at detectors myself and have a few bookmarked as I'm now only allowed to walk for excersise I think now might be a good time to start.
One thing he did say is to always get the land owners permission as most are farmers, and grumpy * who would put a load of buckshot into yer * lol

Is it an outright ban in place, can you not go beach or on farm land with the farmers permission...?

Over here you of course cant go on any site that is a scheduled monument and those are anything historical and covers buildings and places.....but we can go out and detect other places so long as we have permission from the land owner or council or crown.

As far as I know it is, even the sale or advertising of Metal detectors is illegal.

Some of my fav finds are roman stuff,i just find it crazy i can dig something up and im the first person in 2000 years to have held it.
Of course we all dream of that mega riches find but very very few people take up this hobby thinking they will be rich....and those that do are fools.
