Best Areas to Live in Glasgow?

For young first time buyers?

I've been looking at various places recently, but it's occurred to me that I don't know what many of the local areas wold be like to actually live in. Obviously west end is off the table as it's extortionate, but outside of that, what are good areas to live in and which areas should be avoided?

Edit: Should probably say we're thinking no more than 100k. So that would rule a few areas out I'd imagine. Looking for a flat probably

 

Depends where you would like to live as there are nice and bad parts of most areas which are affordable. By that I mean if you would prefer to move somewhere in the West or East ends, south side or the North of the city.

Few areas of the city I'd recommend for affordable homes in decent areas are Croftfoot, Queens Park (although some may avoid due to being right next to Govanhill - major avoid alert there by the way) and Bishopbriggs which could work out ok for your price range if you're flexible.

Plenty others but just ones off the top of my head. Other posters will have other suggestions worth looking into.

 

I stayed in Cathcart, nice area and if/when I'm looking to buy it would be an area I would seriously consider.

I quite like the idea of living in the southside, but I am open to suggestion elsewhere because I really don't know good areas from bad in all honesty. We saw a nice place on rightmove that I think was in Croftfoot, good to hear that's not a dive

 

Carntyne, Riddrie or Baillieston. Bishopbriggs, or Kirkintilloch if you would go out a bit further.

Plenty of decent areas in that budget. Best thing you could do is get a rough idea of the area you want to be and go a drive round at day and at night to get a feel for the place to see how it seems.

 

One of my pals lives near Mount Florida and they said Cathcart is one to look at as well, what's it like to live there?

 

Cheers mate, these are areas I have noticed but didn't really know anything about them. Bishopbriggs would probably be considered, but Kirkintilloch would probably be a bit further out than I'd want

 

It's good, I stayed 1 min walk from the station so you were 10 mins if that into central.

Next to shawlands/Battlefield as well, hampden up the road with the big Asda then directly on to the M74

It was pretty quiet as well, the odd nutter and a fair few students but overall it was a very decent place to live.

One thing about southside though, if you have a half decent car or take pride in it make sure you have a decent parking area or you will forever be going out to your car to find scratches from people walking by and cars hitting it because cars park along both sides of the street.

 

You get the odd nutter anywhere I suppose, I would never have considered that regarding the cars, good advice

 

Dean Park in Renfrew......7 miles from the city centre, right next to the motorway, good transport links and next to Braehead and Xscape

 

Any idea whereabouts in Glasgow you're looking for? East end top end of Baillieston, some parts of Riddrie, Fullarton, Mount Vernon (lucky to get something that price in Mounty but there are some flats), Sandyhills is decent...

 

Been in cardonald for 6 months now,its a queit area but far from snobby,and does have its ned element.Best of both worlds.Its also handy for everything aldi,morrisons,bellahouston sports complex,pollok park,bellahouston park.Easy access to city centre,silverburn,barrhead,the qauy plentys buses,trains.Some nice restaurants just misto,bella vita.

Bishopbriggs for 100k would be pushing it for a house ,all depends what you want and what you are used to.

Just helped my mate move in last month to Milton which is near Bishopbriggs and had a bad name years ago for car thieves .He had already stayed in the street renting a house for a few years and then bought one for around 75k ,ex council front back door mid terraced,3 bedrooms and its minted.
also they have flattened a lot of the old tenements and building new houses i think around 300 houses so i would say a sound investement.
When i helped him move the neighbours from street all helped as well which i thought was nice and although it is a scheme there is * all wrong with that
All depends what you want he loves it ,good transport to city centre or 10 mins taxi to byres road

 

Only issue I could see with Cathcart is resale value if that's something you would be looking at further down the line. There are loads of flats up for sale which have been for some time and can't get shifted. My mate owns a flat out there and he's in that boat just now, wants to sell and has been trying for over 2 years now but can't generate any interest so now desperate to let it out and that is proving a struggle as well.

The area is nice and quiet enough but hasn't had any real investment for some time, which could be the reason why.

 

What TF said about cars is particularly applicable as well just to add to what I posted above. Very true indeed!

 

I think Renfrew would be a bit outside the range we'd be looking at, cheers though.

I was thinking southside somewhere, but as I said I'm very open to other places, southside aint the cheapest.

I work at the Science Park between Maryhill and Bearsden, my GF works in Airdrie, my family are spread between Irvine/Kilmarnock and Clydebank, hers are Bellshill. Most of my pals are in and around glasgow (Ibrox, cowcaddens, battlefield). So a bit of a spread

I saw some nice properties in Milton but had no idea what it was like tbh, It does look convenient, especially with me working towards bearsden.

That is something I'd be thinking of a few years down the line, I guess the problem is the landscape can completely change in the years that you live somewhere, for better or worse
