No excuses but thats one of the hardest and most important 90 mins of the season so there would have been nerves and it showed but were through so happy days in the end.

If he had defended that badly in the IDF Palestine would be a free country.

Yes, I am one of the most patient guys with Bitton here but seriously, the experiment has to stop. He is not a CB. Quite easy to be a CB against the shambles of opposition we have in the league that don't attack. Rivaldo is here, we should have Simunovic, Boyata, him, and Sviatchenko for that role. Ajer should be gradually introduced to the squad as he is visibly not ready for games like the one we had today and Lustig, for the more he has been a great player for a long time, deserves some time in the bench (or not even that). Enough with the improvisation, in some way, what happened today is good because we got a wake up call in the right time and were taught a lesson when we could afford it. But we need to learn from today.

He's not a CB at the top level surely that debate is put to bed!

Hopefully puts to bed this daft notion that he can play CB

Said last week he done alright but cannot be trusted in the groups or against stronger opposition and got absolutely slated by someone here.

Either way from what I read and managed to see I think my point has been proven as a valid one.

I love this Celtic side. It's one of the best we had in my lifetime. Bitton unfortunately (for me) isn't good enough in the midfield. He isn't good enough at the back. He isn't good enough for Celtic.

Under Brendan we have invested in the midfield and upfront. And it has shown drastic improvement. Putting Gambia aside the defence hasn't been touched. With rivaldo potentially being one for the future I hope we get a cb ready to go before the window shuts.

We could really cause a few upsets if we get a solid cb alongside Jozo in my opinion

There is no chance he will play centre back in the groups

All you got to do is look at their first after the break. He was out on the left wing closer to midfield than at his CB position. Madness. The second goal after the break and their third he was in no mans land ball watching. The guy is simply not a CB no two ways about it.

Decent cover, but not a CB at the European level. Add to that the fact that he won't get a game with Boyata or Coatzee in the mix, and he won't get a crack in the midfield. Could be a January exit I think.

    Tough second half.

Delighted for the job he's done in getting us into the groups. Big performances away to Rosenborg and last week.

Not a centre half and needed called upon when we got an injury crisis. Job done.

Canny defend, slow, physically disinterested, no urgency, reckless with the ball....not a first team player

I think when we're dictating play, having all the ball, then he'll be fine at centre back. When we're under the cosh, with teams constantly attacking us, then the fact he is not a centre back will show. Its no fault of his.

Get him sold and tell Erik to * up and let him know with Jozo, plastic pitches and injuries is going to get more then enough game time and chances to earn his spot back.

ffs! If boyata can do it, Erik should be able to prove his worth again. Bitton is not needed and can be sold to the highest bidder.

Just shows how much Jozo looked after him last week. It was panic stations for a wee bit there with a raw, inexperienced 19yo beside him.

But fair play, did a job for us when needed and for that the big man desreves credit!!

Defensively we were horrendous, and it's a good job it was a largely dead rubber game where our frailties were found out.

Domestically Bitton can do a job in defence, but certainly not in Europe. Not only is there too much pressure on us financially to take the risk, but the quality we're up against is almost infinitely better. It's also relatively unfair on the guy to expect him to perform as a quality centre back at this level.

I'm not going to be too harsh on the guy, as he had the bottle to fill in when asked, when a lot of players would have hid away. But the main thing to take from today is that we're lucky to have learnt the lesson for sure about Bitton's capabilities as a centre back without it coming from a horrendous result. Also, if anything it might be a blessing in disguise as it shows us that we need to address these defensive issues.
