Meanwhile, Rodgers is ready to re-open contract talks with Stuart Armstrong.

After enjoying a superb season Armstrong, 25, has been in discussions with Celtic over an extension.

As yet both parties have yet to strike an agreement, with Armstrong’s current deal up at the end of the season.

Rodgers added: “I wanted to put it on the back burner towards the end of last season.

“I didn’t want any distractions, and there was a period of time when it wasn’t resolved. We put the contract talks on hold. Stuart had the Scotland game and a holiday, so I’m sure they will resume over the course of the season.

“Stuart had a brilliant campaign, he came on great strides last season. Contracts are always about length of time or finances, but I am pretty confident the club and the agent will come to an agreement.

“Stuart is happy here in this environment and he knows he is improving and developing so let’s wait and see. He’s someone I’m keen to keep.

“In his own mind he’s been through a tough couple of years, but now he has found a level of consistency and form.”

Love the guy, don't think he'll ever be a 'Mr Celtic' type to single-mindedly commit to another 4 years or that though. I think he comes across as a committed athlete who is enjoying his career and different leagues/challenges would interest him. What I'm getting at is it wouldn't surprise me to see him move.

I think he will sign a new deal mind, and he will still be here for a while yet but won't be shocked if not.

Tough to comment on what's going on here. I can imagine he's leveraging his position to get the big 4 year contract. He's probably on a relatively low wage considering we paid money for him from Dundee United.

Then again, maybe we're low balling him significantly. We're in a fairly strong position too. You've got to think we could sign a quality CM this summer and we already have the likes of Eboue and Ajmer to come through. He could just as easily fall away next season and the dreams of a big money contract in the EPL might go too.

I thought this deal would've been an easy one and if it doesn't go through I think it will be quite worrying. On paper it should be done by now.

I don't think this is any bother. Negotiating takes a while.

Should not be low balling him ,he was a standout performer that br wants to keep ,my take on it is, he already has been sounded out and has offers , he will want them atleast matched, and a long term deal .
Trouble is he could wind down now and get a healthy sign on fee with no transfer fee involved, which means we need to push the boat out a wee bit more maybe.
