Hopefully just a backup option, if not we're severely downgrading from Roberts...

£1 million would be about right me in my opinion. I agree the price is a little steep but I think people are underestimating his talents, perfect player for Rodgers, and a great backup option who could push for a regular place in our side. Not too worried about his age until he starts showing signs of it, not like we are signing Bruno Alves and Clint Hill.

Give them GMS and Scott Allan for him.

Sinclair is our number one left winger at the moment and was player of the season. Realistically we aren't going to be going all out budget wise on a left winger. It's not an area we need to strengthen in so to speak. We do need an improvement in terms of back up for that position though, Hayes has proven himself extremely capable at SPFL level all his career and is coming into his peak now. Rodgers has also proven to be able to get the best out of players so no reason why he couldn't do so with Hayes.

If we signed Hayes and Roberts I think it would make perfect sense.

I'd be over the moon with that.

Hayes would be a very good squad player and we all know how good Paddy is. I don't think for a second that Hayes is going to be the new right winger.

People, we signed Scott Sinclair with no UCL money. Stop writing this off as a cheap option to replace Roberts. Hayes is solid, hard working winger with end product who can play both sides. Would be a replacement for GMS who can push Sinclair and Forrest. We will be getting another winger in to replace Roberts, if its not dead that he may still make a return. Have some patience, I think Brendan Rodgers knows what he's doing.

1 million is fair for a player that is clearly the best in Scotland outside of our squad. Didn't Hibs knock back 2 million for Cummings?

Exactly, I agree that £1.2 million is a tad steep for a winger who will most likely be a rotational piece, but people are acting like Hayes is just another plug whose decent in the SPL. The guy is quality and has been for some time. If this gets done its a solid transfer imo.

Celtic made their move to land Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes on Thursday night.

And the Parkhead club hope to agree a deal worth £1.2million for the Republic of Ireland star before Hayes joins Martin O'Neill's squad for Sunday's friendly with Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

English Championship sides Cardiff City and Birmingham City are also keen to land the 29-year-old wide man.

On Thursday, however, Celtic were trying to broker an agreement on a fee after Aberdeen reluctantly agreed to let their talisman go.

The Pittodrie club are keen to sign Ryan Christie on a permanent basis following the 22-year-old Celtic midfielder's successful loan spell in the Granite City.

If a players-plus-cash agreement proves elusive, though, the Scottish champions face a fee of around £1.2m for Hayes who is under contract with Derek McInnes' Dons until the summer of 2019.

Birmingham manager Harry Redknapp travelled to Glasgow to watch the winger in Saturday's 2-1 Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic at Hampden, while Cardiff had three bids of £650,000 kicked out by the Pittodrie club in January.

Cardiff remain the biggest threat to Celtic's hopes of landing the player.

But Hayes is keen to be reunited with Parkhead boss Brendan Rodgers, who was his academy coach at Reading.

With Celtic loan star Patrick Roberts having returned to his parent club Manchester City after last Saturday's clinching of the Treble, Rodgers is in the market for a wide player, a midfielder and a central defender before the Champions League qualifiers begin in mid-July.

And he has long been an admirer of Hayes, who joined Aberdeen from Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2012.

Despite the move, Parkhead coach John Kennedy claimed yesterday that wholesale changes are unlikely to be made to Rodgers' squad this summer.

'The important thing is keeping the squad together and that we don't make too many changes,' said the former Celtic defender.

'If you can add one or two who can make us better then you want to do that because you want to improve in all areas, but it's very difficult to do that.

'We have a strong group and if you are not going to make the team stronger, then there is no point bringing in extra bodies.

'Our approach will be, if it's better than what we have then we will add, and if not then we just go with what we have got.'

Shamrock Rovers, meanwhile, have confirmed that Celtic will travel to Dublin later this summer for a friendly at Tallaght Stadium on Saturday, July 8.

Yeah I'm finding some reactions really over the top.

He's comfortably the best player in the leage outwith our team. And he's a massive upgrade on GMS.

He's a more well rounded player than Forrest.

After Brendan saying he wants quality over quantity, excuse me for not being happy with this, and he is around the same level as Forrest for me his level is the SPFL, signings like this aren't getting it done in Europe.

From that article above. Hayes hardly fits that description.

I imagine this is a replacement for GMS. We will need two wingers, so I'm praying that is what we are doing. Of course I trust Brendan entirely but I never seen this coming. Not at all.

I also really hope Christie is not part of the deal.

If we sign 4 players - 3 being first team players and Hayes being a squad/rotational player, would you still be * off?

We're probably going to get rid of about 7 or 8 players this summer, including GMS, which leaves us with two wingers. Getting Hayes in as back up to Sinclair...I really don't see the problem. If he is signed as Roberts' replacement then fair enough, I won't be overly excited, but I very much doubt he is.

Plus, how do you know he can't cut it in Europe? Scott McDonald did it. Didier Agathe did it. Hartley and Robson coped just fine. Scott Brown is doing it.

They were all signed from this league.

Brendan said that he wouldn't replace any of his team with any other player from the SPFL and he mentioned Hayes in that. I don't understand this one at all. He's a good player, but he isn't progress.

Exactly hopefully this is all * from Brendan approaching Hayes after the final, if not then as others have said the fee seems way too much especially if Christie is also a makeweight in the deal.

I knew they had worked together previously but honestly felt it was the press putting 2 and 2 together. Surprised we seem to be making a move.

I suppose we need 2 wingers and I've been saying it for a while, so as long as someone else is brought in when GMS goes this won't bother me.

Don't tell me you would be happy going into the Champions League with Jonny Hayes, if you are then fair play but I know I'm not the only one a bit miffed with this one.
