Celtic hitkid Jack Aitchison reveals ex-Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool star Kolo Toure told him he’s one of the best he’s ever seen at his age

HE may only have one minute of first-team action for this year, but Kolo Toure is still making his presence felt.

Celtic starlet Jack Aitchison was quick to pay tribute to the veteran stopper, and explained how some words of wisdom have helped his push for another taste of first-team action.

Toure kicked off the season as a regular with the Hoops, and was instrumental in their qualification for the Champions League, but has slipped down the pecking order in recent months.

However, Aitchison believes the Ivory Coast international is hugely influential behind the scenes and revealed the extent of their former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool man’s commitment to the cause.

He said: “On a personal level, the manager has been very good and given me a lot of advice, along with Chris Davies and Kolo Toure.

“It’s good to be involved with big names who have done a lot in their football careers, so I can make the most of their experience to improve my own game.

“Kolo’s given me some advice from a defender’s point of view, which is great for a young striker.

“For example, he’s told me where to stand and move.

“He’s played in some of the biggest games, with and against some of the biggest names, like Thierry Henry.

“Kolo told me I was one of the best he’s seen at my age so that gives me the belief that I can go quite far.”

Rodgers has spoken before about the importance of his younger players looking to the likes of Toure and seeking to match up to their everyday professionalism.

He admitted he’d interrupted the players’ lunch just to take them for a quick look at one of the 36-year-old’s gym sessions.

Aitchison added: “Kolo’s great with the younger players. He comes to watch us train and the games when he can. The manager and Chris Davies are the same.

“Kolo’s had a good career and it says a lot about him that he’s willing to give up his time like that.

“He’s still the ultimate professional, even at his age and stage.

“On top of that, he’s just a very nice guy. I think his son is in the youth system, so he understands it all from that perspective as well.

“He’s bought into the fact that we’re all a big family.”

Last May, highly-rated striker Aitchison became the youngest ever player to represent Celtic in a competitive match at 16 years and 71 days – when he featured in the 7-0 win over Motherwell.

To top it off, he scored the seventh goal with his first touch, adding ‘youngest ever goalscorer’ to his early landmarks.

The graduate of Celtic’s St Ninian’s development school programme has largely had to bide his time since, with only an eight-minute cameo in January’s 4-0 rout of Hearts since.

Given Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths’ has had to settle for a reduced role, Aitchison is happy to bide his time and hopes wrapping up the title early will see Rodgers blood a few more Parkhead prospects.

He said: “It would be great to see the boys tie the league up because I think there will be opportunities for the younger boys, if we deserve it.

“It’s up to the manager if and when he decides to put the boys in. The first team will want to stay unbeaten, but I think he would trust us to do a job.

“It’s nearly a year since I played and scored against Motherwell but I did come on against Hearts, so I can see he’s still looking at me. I just need to keep working hard.”

Aitchison has also been a stand-out for his country at youth level, with the Under-17s on the brink of sealing a fourth-straight appearance in the European Championships.

Scot Gemmill’s tartan teens play the third game of the final ‘elite round’ qualification stage against Switzerland this evening and look odds-on to progress after fine wins over Montenegro and Serbia over the past week.

Aitchison, who has skippered the side and bagged a brace in the opening 6-1 dismantling of Montenegro, said: “We’re ranked sixth at our age level in Europe.

“We believe and we trust in what Scot Gemmill asks us to do. He’s smart and has experience in these competitions.

“I feel like I’ve benefited from training with the first team at Celtic. A few of the other boys are in the same situation at their clubs and I think you can see it’s paying off.”

Great results alright. Sadly the u19s getting beat 3-0 by Austria shows the downward spiral up to senior level...

If your good enough your old enough. I think there's so many players that could do a job in senior footie that don't get a chance because there only 16...Look at Odegaard he was awesome playing Norwegian premier league footie. Think Madrid was too soon for him. JA could do a job in our first team already i reckon. He came on and scored with his 1st touch, but doesn't get a chance now, why bring him on then? Fair enough it was under different managers. Hope he gets gametime
    now that leagues official won.

He'll be ready next season I think. As third choice. He'll get plenty of run outs and even starts.
