Nílton Santos (12) - Spent his entire professional at Botafogo, making over 700 appearances for the side.




A teammate & defensive partner of my previous pick, Djalma Santos, who despite sharing a surname aren't actually related, and a fellow World Cup winner with Brazil (1958 & 1962).

Like Djalma, Nilton was considered to be something of a pioneer in his position and is widely regarded as not only one of the best defenders of all time, but also one of the first proper attacking left-backs/full backs. During his playing career he earned the nickname "The Encyclopaedia" due to his impressive knowledge and understanding of all things football.

Despite not being a household name, Nilton Santos was a highly respected player, so much so that he would was named in the World Team of the 20th Century (the full team can be seen here) and was also the recipient of a Golden Foot Legends Award in 2009.
