The former AC Milan midfielder has come under fure in recent weeks and McKinlay, writing in the Glasgow Evening Times, said: "He has struggled to adapt to the SPL and I wouldn't be too surprised if he found himself heading for pastures new in the summer transfer window."

Boss Gordon Strachan has defended the player, commenting: “I thought he played brilliantly at the start of the season.

"Sure, he had a dip in form, but he did so at the same time as everybody else."

good thing is we bought him cheap and he hasn't been a complete flop and still has a name for himself in italy. so should get money back

At Celtic Park he can look like a world beater.Away from home it's often a different story. He just seems to lack the desire and aggression to be a success.Does he want it enough?

It's a shame because if he got a bit of desire and courage he could be as good as Ferguson IMO.

    * sake, if Tosh McKinlay is saying that then we should do everything in our power to keep him. McKinlay couldny spot a good player even if he was headbutting him.

if there was a bit of hunger and drive he would well,i remember been at the hearts match start of the season and thought he was quality, since then he's been poor, would love for him to do well because he has shown glimes of good play

I actually see the player that Donati COULD be, but hes not living up to it at the moment, whether he ever will or not is anyones guess.

I think hes had that kind of career, someone at AC thought he was worth £10 Million, then he spent the bulk of his career floating about on loan.

A nearly man could be his epitath, or next season he could be a legend !!

I hope option 2 turns out to be true. I am not a big fan of instant player turnover, although sometimes enough is enough !

everyone has turned on him because of one poor perfomance away to barca. Apart from that he has been one of our best players over the last month or two. I think he does lack a bit of bravery but he is a decent player. He is also by far the best CM passer we have. In his best games he comes close to being that sort of traffic cop midfielder that everything goes througn. I must admit it is very hard to pick between him and Hartley because both are decent. I would tend to pick Hartley away/CL/OF and Donati at home in the matches we dominate.

imo, he simply dosn't try. or he tries too much, i'm not sure which it is tbh. he lost the ball against aberdeen when he came on because he tried to run at a player with it before he actaully HAD the ball so he lost it mid air.
this inconsistancy isn't him trying to find his feet in scotland though.
when he signed i read an artical on him. it said basically "strange signing by celtic, player can either not turn up or can play some wonderfull passes depending on which turns up at celtic they may have signed a real good player"

Simply not true.. People who have given him every opportunity and wanted him to do well have seen him play often enough (not a reaction to his game in the nou camp) , yet they haven't seen anything to suggest he's got what it takes to be a permanant fixture in the team.. He's too much of a liability and offers very little.. More than likely the Barcelona game was the last straw for people who had been losing patience with him and his lacklustre effort/performances..

i agree with keltoi apart from 1 half in barca massimo has been 1 of celtic's player since the turn of the year.

i can't think of a match were he played poor.i can think of several matches were he was our man of the match.

I can't wait to see the back of him, he offers nothing to the midfield and can't even complete a 10 yard pass...probably one of WGS poorest signings to date...

This is my reasoning on Donati and why he shouldn't play..

What he does well is get the ball and give it.. That's all that he's about though..
He either isn't capable of taking a game by the scruff of the neck or is workshy and just goes hiding when we need a bit of fight in midfield.. The exact same can be said of Nakamura , but in his case he simply can't impose himself and should not even play those type of games , Naka gets little protection from referees and when he does get given a foul it's a fine line betwen him falling to the ground or being pushed over by an opponent.. Donati has no excuse for lack of fight..

With him it's all about his passing.. He can start a move from inside his own half , he can keep a move going when he's in the opposition half but thats all he does , and when his passing is off he offers nothing , absolutely nothing else so it's inevitable people will slate him for having a bad game when he's misplacing passes time and again.. Already mentioned this before as his weak point and will say it again - playing away from home in the SPL with Donati in the team is like playing with a man short..

If Donati was in the Man Utd team instead of Carrick he'd probably be hailed as an important part of the team.. I liken him to Carrick because last year when Scholes was running the show , Carrick was the "get and give" player to feed Scholes.. He didn't do anything special with emphasis on attack , and unless he was backtracking to help the defence or pushing forward to keep a move going he was more often than not holding a line behind Scholes and as soon as he got the ball , and this didn't matter if it was a 5 yard pass or a 20 yard pass he fed it straight to Scholes (And in the process handing the responsability to Scholes)..
Thats Donati to a tee. He does his 5 yard pass or his 20 yard pass or his diagonal pass and then stops , for the most part he hands responsability to other players..
I think Brown contributes to the team with surging runs and tackles and link up play.. His headless chicken performances will give the Donati apologists ammunition but anyone can see he offers more than the Italian.. Hartley offers more than Donati also because he retains posession well , has composure , knows when to push forward and isn't scared to have a shot from twenty yards (as opposed to Donati ballooning the ball high wide and ugly) , and I prefer Robson and Naka over Donati because they will offer us goals , and in the defensive department I think every single one of those players including Mcgeady gives us more effort and commitment than the one paced Donati who tends to run about with little purpose..
The Donati fans would be right in saying there is something there , but it isn't something that we need in every league game right now if we're going to retain the title.. A world class player in midfield would make Donati look good but we don't have that and we need a high level commitment from everyone.. He's too big a liability and this idea that he's been great at Parkhead (world class performances as someone called them) one week , and then hopeless the next week is a familiar pattern.. We are expected to beat every team at Parkhead and over any season it's where our best performances come from , and taking everything into account I just don't think Strachan should be so accomdating to the guy when there are others who can do a better job.. (With regards to defence there are probably also others who can do a better job than the current lot , an arguement for another thread :86:)
