I actually think juventus have the best defence in European football.

Van Dijk will either go Liverpool or United imo. Think he could pick whichever top team he wants though tbh.

Aye they probably do have the best functioning defence as they've played together a good while but Chiellini and Barzagli are getting old and Bonucci is 29 as well. I wouldn't have any of them in my top 5. I'd have Bonucci in my top 10.

They are 3 good defenders though, defensive wise the 3 of them are probably near the best. As a lot of the other best like Ramos, Pique, Boateng and Hummels aren't actually that solid a defender, they are better footballers than defenders.

The best defenders are probably Godin, Thiago Silva, Bonucci, Barzagli, Terry, Pepe and Chiellini. If you had a back 3 and had 3 of them in it, it would probably be the best defence around although Barzagli and Terry are on their last legs, they're still capable of coming in to do a job in big games or now and again.

As all round footballers they're not the best but as out and out defenders I think all 3 are in my top 10. They don't have the versatility of van Dijk (except maybe Bonucci) but all 3 are absolute rocks.

Aye no denying they're some of the best defenders about, that's clear to see. But I still think there's others who've been mentioned that have other qualities that make them all round better defenders.

Jerome Boateng is the ultimate CB imo

Van Dijk will finally get the adulation he deserves when he moves to a bigger club

Aye, although it would come down to what style of football you wanted to play.

Diego Simeone, defensive style I think if you were picking a back 3 i'd pick Bonucci, Godin and Thiago Silva they are still fit and capable of playing full seasons and are 3 of the best defensively and make very few mistakes. That for me would be the soundest defence.

If you wanted to play more Guardiola style passing football I would pick Van Dijk, Bonucci and Hummels as a back 3, 3 of them are good on the ball, Van Dijk and Hummels especially but they would also defend well and aren't quite as wreckless as other good defenders like Pique who is too slow even compared to Hummels and Ramos who is too dodgy defensively and gets sent off all the time. Boateng I would say is like Van Dijk although I think Van Dijk is a better defender and more of a leader and captain although Boateng is an underrated passer of the ball and they are both quite mobile, Van Dijk probably better in the air too.

    See Everton are apparently favourites.

Would be a poor decision. Sideways step. He could play for any team in Europe ffs.

Would love to see him at PSG or Dortmund. Think those two would be a perfect fit for him, but as usually happens, he'll move likely move to another English club.

I thought it was between City and United? A bidding war would be good

I really, really can't see Everton getting him, it would be a sideways step really.

Everton must surely only be linked due to koeman?
Massive sideways step when surely he could be getting a move to a top team elsewhere.

Southampton want £40m for Van Dijk, with manager Claude Puel denying there is a £25m buyout clause in the centre-back's contract. (Daily Mirror)

So, that would mean a minimum £4m for us.
That would help towards bringing McCarthy to Celtic.

Strongly linked with Man city now, that's sure to bump the price up a bit, could be looking at +4mil coming our way.

£25m does seem like a small sum for a buy out clause. They are usually over priced so as to protect the player' position at the club while offering a great return if they are triggered. I thought we should have got £20m for him never mind a £25m BOC.

I think he deserves to be playing CL football, it's a waste of his class if he's not. Maybe Everton are going to try and build a team that'll compete for the top 4 but it's going to be hard considering the money/competition for those places. I wouldn't move there if I was him.

I think City probably need him more than any other team.
