I've always been more impressed by them as a unit, rather than individually. That's also testamount to their ability I suppose. Chiellini's a Rolls Royce of a defender.
Too right mate, hard as * nails but still classy enough.

Can't believe I didn't have Puyol in my other top 5 btw!

Pepe is definitely top 10. * of a guy but he's a quality defender.

Called it right with Maldini and Nesta as the modern top two.

Beckenbauer is widely regarded as the greatest, and I'd put Maldini after him.

Aye Puyol another in the same mould as Godin, he was a superb defender that always gave 110%

Since when did anyone outside England mention Sol Campbell amongst the best defenders in the world... anyone at all really.

Both lists are dung :celtman2: Looks like someone trying too hard to be a smart *, choosing players they've only read about on Wikipedia.

I agree on Campbell but it's hard to pick out any of the others as not being all-time greats.

Aye, no doubt they are great as a unit, not something you can use against them though. Would also have Bonucci over Chiellini, personally.

I'd have a good few over VVD that didn't make your top 5. The three Juve centre backs, Munichs two, at least two from Madrid and probably more. Pique wouldn't be in the top 5 either and don't see a whole lot of T.Silva.

    1. Godin
    2. Bonucci
    3. Chiellini
    4. Ramos
    5. Hummels

Van Dijk is a fantastic centre half but not in the same bracket as those 5. I still think Alderweireld is as good as Virgil.

In that order. I love me some Bonucci.

I'll have to think about all time.

I'd take VVD over Jerome Boateng every day of the week, he's a bit of a bombscare. I probably don't watch enough Italian football to properly judge the Juve defenders right enough.

I've never understood the hype in regards to Boateng. He's better now than he was at City, but he's still far from top class. Always has a mistake in him.

Think Bayern could do a lot better than him.

Not for me, maybe over the next couple of years.

Boateng's career has went much like Pique's in the way that both have improved immensely since their days in Manchester. He's one of the best for me, complete centre half.

Actually completely forgot he was at City! I've always viewed him as the world class version of Efe, can be exceptional but also horrendous.

For those who are in love.....
John Terry was better than Sol Campbell in my opinion, and probably the best English centre back in my lifetime..

One off my head is Roberto Ayala in that excellent Valencia side of the time. Hard hitting, aggressive defender who wasn't the tallest, like Cannavaro..
