Interesting that Brendan mentions Jock could easily be manager of Barca today, i've watched that game countless times, and the magnitude of the achievement never ceases to amaze me, the performance, the domination, just having the balls to win the biggest prize in club football and do it in style, chills every time.

IN celebration of the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s momentous 1967 European Cup win, the club have released an official commemorative DVD and book.

Thursday, May 25, 1967 remains the greatest day in Celtic Football Club's long and illustrious history and through the DVD - that premiered at Celtic Park last night - and the new Lisbon book, supporters can relive the day Jock Stein's side defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon.

Celtic 50th Anniversary of Lisbon Double DVD

In Celtic history it is the 'Greatest Story Ever Told' and now for the first time, on the 50th anniversary of a unique European Cup victory, the story is told by the men who made it happen - the Lisbon Lions.

The drama, the tension, the relief, the sheer joy and exhilaration of this ultimate victory are all captured in this fantastic double DVD collectors’ item.

Celtic 50th Anniversary of Lisbon Book

The club’s new official 50th Anniversary of Lisbon book perfectly captures the remarkable triumph as the team became the first from Britain to lift the trophy.

Charting the years leading up to the momentous day in May, the Celtic 50th Anniversary of Lisbon book details the stories, emotions and memories of what will forever be remembered as the single-most important match in Celtic’s proud history.

CELTIC Park hosted a special film premiere on Thursday night as the new DVD celebrating the Lisbon triumph of 1967 was shown in the Kerrydale Suite.

Over 200 season ticket holders joined a number of the Lisbon Lions at the event, while Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and his assistant, Chris Davies, were also there to watch the film.

The DVD, which has been produced by Celtic’s multi-media department, tells the story of the extraordinary triumph of Jock Stein’s Celtic side in winning the European Cup, and in this, the 50th anniversary season of that momentous occasion, the story is told through the words of the Lisbon Lions themselves.

On the night, Jim Craig, Bertie Auld, Bobby Lennox, John Clark, Stevie Chalmers, John Fallon, John Hughes and Charlie Gallagher, who was celebrating his 76th birthday, were all in attendance, as were the families of Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Ronnie Simpson, Joe McBride, Willie O’Neill, Sean Fallon and Neilly Mochan. And Celtic legend, Danny McGrain, was also there.

And everyone in the audience was enthralled and moved by the film, while there was laughter afterwards when Jim Craig, John Clark and Bertie Auld took part in a short question and answer session.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the film, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: “I thought the film was fantastic. Chris and I wanted to come along, first of all to pay respect to the real true legends of Celtic and the guys who set Celtic on their way to being the club they are today.

“And it was also interesting for me to see the behind-the-scenes look at it as well, from footage that I’d never seen before. I could sit and listen to the stories all night, and how the film was put together was brilliant. It was a great insight and some wonderful memories to look at.

“What’s really interesting for me, from a management perspective, is the real significance that Jock Stein has had. I’ve obviously been fully aware of him as a manager, but he really was the catalyst for British football.

“If you go back to that period of time, whenever teams were doing all those type of running drills, he came in and changed the identity of football at Celtic, and it’s managers like myself at Celtic who have to maintain that over the course of their time here.

“But I’ll also take away the great stories of the former players who were here, and how humble they are. The great achievement they made but the humility with which these guys present themselves is really amazing, and they’re a real shining example for the modern football player.”

I find it hard to emotionally connect with the Lisbon Lions thing. I think it's because it happened before I was born. I fully realise the magnitude of it and that it is probably THE defining moment in the history of the club but still it's hard to connect to something you never saw with your own eyes. That's why Seville was so devastating to me. That would have been our generation's Lisbon. When we are old and doddery we could sit down in the rocking chair and tell the grandchildren about the glorious night in Seville and just how good that guy Larsson was. It was stolen away from us. :54:

Does anyone else feel like that? Like they have total respect for the Lions and what they did but they just find it hard to emotionally connect to it.

IT was 50 years ago today, on November 30, 1966, that Celtic took the next step on their European Cup adventure when they faced French champions, Nantes, in the first leg of their second round tie.

Jock Stein’s side travelled to France and recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over their opponents, who actually took the lead after 16 minutes.

However, just eight minutes later Joe McBride equalised, latching on to a Bobby Lennox pass to score with what was his first shot of the game, while second-half goals from Lennox and Stevie Chalmers ensured that the Hoops took control of the tie, with the second leg scheduled for the following week at Celtic Park.

And Bobby Lennox, in his autobiography, later revealed how close Joe McBride came to not appearing in the game.

He said: ‘There was a bit of a glitch before the match – as our coach approached the stadium, Joe McBride realised that that he had forgotten to bring his boots. Jock lost the place with him and Joe and Neilly Mochan, our kit man and trainer, had to take a taxi back to the hotel and then return to the ground, where they had to wade through the crowd to get to the dressing-room with minutes to spare before the game began. This was one of the few occasions on which anyone was allowed to make such a ‘faux pas’ and still play but Joe was our top scorer that season and Jock was always practical in his decision-making.’

Willie O'Neill key member of the 67 team that made it to Lisbon but didn't play in the final.

on this day 50 years ago, Celtic booked their place in the Quarter-Finals of the 1966-67 European Cup

Back to back 3-1 victories over French side Nantes saw the Hoops through to the last 8.
