An excellent post. It's virtually impossible for anyone who leads a country to be either entirely great or entirely bad.

Castros, indeed Cubas back was against the wall. He did what we did during ww2, root out insurgents & CIA operatives & shoot them.
I'm not an apologist for Castro, however his behaviour can be understood in the context that his country was under threat of imminent invasion from the 'loose cannon' that was & even still is today, American foreign policy. McCarthyism was rampant & if the US had left Cuba & the rest of the Americas alone I dare say history would be so different.
The only reason the US didn't invade Canada was because of British Naval power. Latin America & Cuba didn't have that luxury & the US turned them into target practice.

How does that work? There's an enormous land border between the two countries.

The British could have landed anywhere along the East coast & threatened any of the major cities, including Washington DC.
It was a gamble too far.

You forgot to mention Churchill. Selective opinion though.

Churchill ? I thought he was democratically elected by the uk population and then voted out of office years later. I think someone needs to read their history books more.

Do you know why he never wanted an election?

For right or wrong do you know the reason?

Did the Indians or the Irish ever vote for him?

It says a lot about the British and their mentality that they have him on cash notes and generally regard him as the 'greatest ever Briton'.

I honestly don't know much about him, but a quick read and it seems he was a bit of a tyrant.

Yea he was a bit of a white supremacist.

I think he is held in high regard by the Brittish as he is remembered for helping take down the * regime, most people are ignorant of his exploits before that.

Was he worried about the Americans trying to rig the election?
