The place buzzed and had an electricity and the clouds of hash hanging over it. A river of pish was constantly flowing like a stream, down the steps and licking at the soles of your days chosen footwear. The cries of the wee cap men with cardboard boxes tied to the front shouting out to get your macaroon bars/ spearmint chewing gum. There was always loads of guys * out of their skulls and the crowd holding them up. Archie Macpherson used to get a song when he walked over the gantry to the commentary box. The place felt like it was always heaving, even during the quieter games. And as a kid I stood down the front. One of the many kids trying to catch the ball when it went out. Then you had a chance of handing the ball to Mc Grain or the Bear Aitken. Big men when I looked up at them, ancient warriors. Now they all look like kids or girls. The biggest thing was the noise that came of that terrace. When we scored half of Glasgow heard the jungle roar. And you knew where you were.

    Here the whole time
Used to try to get in as soon as the turnstiles were opened, £1 at the boys gate, in order to get a spot above one of the entrances from the "concourse". Here you could get an unobstructed view of the pitch, and nor being the tallest that was quite important to me. Always took the one nearest the west end as it was less crowded than the ones in the centre.
Went to my first hun game in the jungle and got in early as usual and went to the east end of the jungle to indulge in some prematch banter. What an eye opener for a 14 year old that was. Watched the game from the very front, right at boot level, we won 3-1, 2 pens from choccy mcclair and an og from jimmy nichol I believe. The vermin rioted up parkhead cross after it and down the road where the forge is now. Windows on our supporters bus got tanned.
My favorite memory of the jungle though is standing at the front of it, again, at the first game of 86/87 season. Opener against Dundee, Albert Kidd actually did a lap of honour during the warm up. He ran right past the jungle giving it thumbs up and winks with the whole jungle singing there's only one Albert Kidd. My mate and I thought it was hilarious, that will live with me for ever.

    This doesn't surprise me. :smiley-laughing002:

Heard many stories about the Jungle. Pish filled cans, Maurice "Judas" Johnston getting warm and bright comments, the place being very crowded and players usually running up to it when we score :icon_mrgreen:

The sad thing now is it is almost a bygone era, when all seater stadiums came in that sense of mingling from the crowd turned into sitting on our arses like we are in front of the tele, as a kid my only memories are getting put up on my da's shoulders to see the game, too young to remember who we played.

During a game, I know a guy called Dom who used to go round The Jungle selling chewing gum and macaroon. Great big guy. On day he was doing his thing, shouting "Macaroon,Spearmint Chewing Gum". Then he fell all the way down the stairs, landed at the fence pitchside on his *. Every one rolled about when he got up and shouted "Broken Macaroon and Spearmint Chewing Gum". Funny as *

Grew up in the old Jungle and fond memories. Yes those were the days when the Macaroon chewing gum guys did their rounds and heaven help any woman who needed a * and didn't know the way. They had to walk through the gents which ran virtually the whole length of the Jungle. Think the lassies had about two cubicles in some far flung corner and that was it.

In the late 60's early 70's many of the Glasgow street gangs had their own wee section and it wasn't uncommon to see gang fights break out. With a truce called for Hun games. :smiley-laughing002:

One of the scariest games was the infamous Janefield Street riot when for some reason the police horses charged up & down that narrow street causing several fans to get trampled on and hurt . A riot broke out &more than one policeman was pulled off their horse and bricks bottles paving slabs you name it being thrown about. I always remember the next home game seeing several police hats being thrown from the Jungle trackside.

There were safety barriers but it wasn't uncommon when we scored to end up trackside after starting the celebrations way up the very back. Of course you had to find your way back up minus a shoe. Believe me no fun hopping back on one foot trying to avoid the * puddles. End of the game you'd make your way back down the front and just pray you'd find a shoe that was the right size for getting home. It didn't matter who it belonged to.

Another memory from the Jungle and no idea if true but a guy stood next to me was telling us before the game how at the last Huns game he had on his brothers coat and found a fist full of air gun darts. Which just so happened to be thrown at the Huns. In those days the huns used to get the entire east terracing, ( Lisbon Lions end) After a while one of the huns could be seen pulling a dart from his hair and screaming, "FFS I've been shot the * bassa's are shooting at us."

In our Centenary year there was an edition of "Not The View" which advertised a pair of Centenary Wellies with club crests on the sides especially designed for the Jungle 'toilets'. Often wondered if anyone actually bought any.

FFS guys could go on for hours with tales of the old Jungle but will give some other auld yins a chance and maybe regale you with a few more another time.

Used to go in the Jungle a lot. Lasting memory for me is still the Janefield riot outside. Still really surprises me that no one died that night. The palce reked of pisch to be fair but by christ when we scored what a surge from the crowd. Always had wee hard men in it and wideos looking to pick pockets as well. Plus the odd knifing, lovely place!:50:

Was only ever in the Jungle a couple of times, usually our supporters bus would end up in the Celtic end or the Jock Stein as its now known, the times I was in it was definitely different, quite a few mad * dare I say it...unsavoury characters :smiley-laughing002: and at that time you were allowed to smoke at the fitba which meant there was a mass cloud of smoke that lingered the whole 90 minutes.

My Da' would always take us to the Celtic End. He felt that The Jungle was maybe a wee bit too crowded for such a young child to be in. Always wanted to see a game there, it always looked fantastic.

I've not been to Celtic Park since it became an all seater. Determined to get to a game before 2020. Will deffo be going in our ten in a row season.

As a 15 year old went there with my Dad for '67 European nights vs Vojvodina (1/4 final) - Caesar scored from corner in 90th min down our end to put us through 2-1 on agg and semi vs Dukla 3-1. Brilliant nights and great memories.
