It's not a laughable concept but I agree with you, Maradona is/was better.

I'm actually surprised more people haven't voted for C.Ronaldo.

Never mind the Cruyff turn, what about the Zidane headbutt.

Give us your reasons why you think that would be funny.

Leo Messi. Granted I only caught the tail end of Maradona's career but one look at comparable stats or videos tells you all you need to know.

Interestingly I think of this question a lot and I always think there's really 2 questions because there is inevitably a greatest ever but also if you were to take into account who was the best, even for a short period of a longer career, then IMO Ronaldinho is very much in the equation.

At Barcelona he was, literally, unbelievable and unplayable for a period.

Keep hearing the * about how Pele played in a team full of greats etc, bla bla bla. Thje * was soooooo gooood that he got into the starting line up in the World Cup final at 17, (aye, he was a passenger in a team full of others who made him!!! lol) and had the audacity to score 2 goals in the final!!!

Then after being injured in the next WC and kicked out the following one, in 1970 he was player of the tournament and again scored in the final.

I love Messi, but he still hasnt done it on the World stage....no question. The players Messi has in support are all fantastic players in their own right....Aguero, Tevez, Di Maria, Higuain, Mascherano! No excuses for having to do it on his own like Maradona sort of did.

People talk about the players around Pele, but he was the complete standout player of his generation and is still revered as one of the 3 greatest, 40 years after retiring. If he was around today with all the benefits of sports science etc, he would still be the best.

I still love watching Messi though.

No one else other than the 3 i have mentioned, should get a look in in my opinion. Ronaldo is a great player, but i never want to watch a match just because he is playing, in the way i would if Cruyff or Best or Zidane or Ronaldinho was playing. He is the most boring and most manufactured great player there has ever been. His PR videos are an embarrassment. Look at how good he is with kids, handicapped etc.....* off.

I don't think Messi has to win the world cup to be counted as the greatest ever.

I have never been arsed by that argument.

No, he doesnt have to, but it would be a major void on his cv for him not to. Its not like he is Gareth Bale with a team of journeymen around him.

Ronaldo seems to be too easily brushed aside when speaking about who is the best ever. His achievements as a footballer should put him rightly in contention

Aye on the pitch. But off it he generally seems to be a great guy. That arrogance he shows just emanates from his will to win.

Agreed however sometimes these things just don't happen for whatever reason.

He was a bawhair away from leading a pretty average Argentina side to the world cup in 2014.

Just wish Higuain hadn't shat his kegs when he was through on goal because if he hadn't we would not be sitting having this debate. :smiley-laughing002:
